    Forget the title fight.

    Forget MMA versus Boxing.

    Forget the #1 contenders match.

UFC 118 – The return of Cakezilla!!!!!!

  2. 45 Huddle says:

Super amped for this card when it was first announced. Not so much lately. I think it’s a combination of a few things.

    1) The UFC promoting Couture/Toney freakshow over a more important fight in Maynard/Florian. I understand why they are doing it, but freakshows are useless. They are doing a disservice to a legit contender in Maynard.

    2) Marquardt fight being removed from the card. I hate when organizations do this. People purchase tickets based on a specific card. When fights are removed not due to injury, I think that’s screwing over the paying public.

    3) I’m sick of BJ Penn. Everytime I see him in interviews, he annoys me. His latest complain was about wrestlers. How about you learn how to get some conditioning and get up from your back instead of complaining about them?

I purchased a ticket to the local theater for this one. Only $15. Not really caring to buy it on PPV.

    • Fluyid says:

Have you done the theater thing before? How was it?

I saw some boxing closed circuit shows way back when, and it was always really cool. I’ve been wondering about the theater experience.

      • 45 Huddle says:

This will be my 1st UFC Theater experience. I’ll post my experience on here after the event.

      • Bebe Rebozo says:

I did the theater thing a few events back and enjoyed it. I am a forty something that doesn’t drink any more so it was a welcome change from the sports bar full of drunk, loud, tapout wearing twenty somethings that think that watching mma automatically makes one a badass.

Big screen was nice, sound was good, no technical glitches, crowd was small as well. It seemed that few people knew it was an option. I hope the theater did well enough to repeat it, but I do kinda hope that the crowds don’t get crazy huge.

    • Mark says:

To be fair, though: did anybody without the last name of Marquardt ever buy a ticket or pay per view specifically to see Nate Marquardt? No offense to the guy, he’s a great fighter, but nobody pays to see him. 90% of the fans are paying to see the top 3 fights (really just the top 2 on most shows, but this one has 3 headliners.) So as long as Couture, Toney, Penn, Edgar, Florian and Maynard all show up, nobody is demanding a refund.

      • Tradition Rules says:

Actually, I have, as he is one of my personal favorites,…but he DOES have a rather bland personality for most mainstream fans.

So you are right that most will NOT buy a PPV or ticker based on him being on or off of a fight card.

      • IceMuncher says:

Fans tend to buy based on the overall card strength. There’s maybe 6 guys that can carry a PPV because fans want to see them specifically (Lesnar, GSP, etc).

On this card, the card is already so deep that Marquardt doesn’t do much, but on a shallower card he definitely adds value. He’s like Florian; he won’t carry a card by himself, but he’s a well-known fighter and if you add a few fighters like him onto a card, it’s considered “stacked” and has higher buyrates as a result.

“Iā€™m sick of BJ Penn. Everytime I see him in interviews, he annoys me.”

      He’s an annoying person.
As bad as jackson, bordering on tito/barnett.

But like anderson, being a legitimate badass who backs it up pretty consistently makes him tolerable.

“I purchased a ticket to the local theater for this one. Only $15.”

      Squirt gun IMO.

      Over in the Frankenstein place.
      šŸ˜‰

  3. Jonathan says:

Listening to Gray Maynard on Beatdown Radio. It is hard to do. He does not seem like the sharpest knife in the drawer, and he has a stuttering problem. Nothing wrong with the stuttering problem but it just because crystal clear why Dana would not want him as their champion.

    Sad but true.

    • Fluyid says:

Hey, James Toney is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and has a speech problem. The UFC doesn’t have any problem putting him out front to talk up his fight. šŸ˜‰

  4. David M says:

I love BJ Penn, easily my favorite fighter. He is one of the few guys who sells PPVs without having to talk; people just recognize world-class fighters when they see them.

This is a great card; I expect:

    BJ ko 3.
    Couture sub 1
Gray via very close and controversial decision
Maia by sub against the guy Ive never heard of
    Nick Diaz sub rd 2

  5. Zack says:

This card is a perfect example of promotions BENEFITING from shitting judging. Judges fucked up BJ/Edgar 1, now UFC gets another legit main event out of it. Same goes for Shogun/Lyoto 1.

  6. Well, there’s a powpowpow meaningless lightweight contest, a freakshow, and a middleweight bout with an easy win being likely. None of those inspire me to watch. The two lightweight fights are great though. I can’t bet against Penn even with the last result, and I think Florian wins a tight decision that most people think is garbage. Rest of it – I guess Diaz and Maia. No sane person is thinking Toney.

  7. robthom says:

    Eeauuw…

    Love Nick!
    Win or lose!!

    Never could stand nate…

    Never even grew on me…

    He’s no Nick.

K and gray, rematch, goof fight…
    Meh.

Although I wouldn’t bet against this being the best card of the year!

Seeing how this crazy MMA goes.
