Boston Globe op-ed: MMA is ‘human dogfighting’

By Zach Arnold | July 28, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

I’ve long-written about the media’s obsession with tying MMA and dog-fighting together. Now the drumbeat has reached Boston’s largest daily publication.

The New York Times recently declared mixed martial arts a “mainstream sport.’’ The point was made within a truly bizarre account detailing how MMA fighters are turning to plastic surgery to alter bones and tissue so that when hit in the face they will be less likely to bleed.

Yes, the author (Peter Funt) is the son of Allen Funt, who produced Candid Camera.

  1. garth says:

the globe is a rapidly-dwindling pile of crap in any event. that they’d try to latch onto some scandalous story (in their eyes) with shock reporting is no surprise.

  2. William Holmes says:

I just threw up my morning cup of coffee.

  3. jr says:

Tiger Woods destroyed his knee playing golf. These columnists pretend nobody ever gets injured in any other sport

  4. Black Dog says:

What is funny about this is: the Times and the “Glob” as we used to call it up there are owned by the same company now.

Mr. Funt’s whining is typical of anyone who lacks understanding of this kind of fighting. These are the same whiners who moaned about pro wrestling’s influence on young people a few years ago.

I don’t know anyone who actually reads the editorials anymore.
