Kimo

By Zach Arnold | July 21, 2009

Here were some online postings of when everything spread like wildfire: here and here.

Yahoo Sports: Former UFC star Kimo Leopoldo not dead

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship contender Kimo Leopoldo appeared at the Orange County Sheriff’s office in Santa Ana, Calif., late Tuesday afternoon, ending rumors of his death that spread rapidly across the Internet.

“He’s standing here in front of me, talking to some members of the press,” said Jim Amormino, the spokesman for the county sheriff’s coroner’s office, in a phone interview. “He’s alive and well.”

Heart attack at 41. Steroid Abuse?

My one memory of Kimbo will always be the Sapp Fight. The way the ref done everything possible to allow Sapp to fight on and at the end of the 1st round Sapp completely gassed and nearly falling over in his corner. Kimbo got screwed that night.

  2. Chuck says:

That’s a God damned shame. RIP Kimo. The ONE guy who always came out with a cross…

  3. klown says:

My timeless memory of Kimo is of Royce manhandling him by the ponytail and punching him in the face and groin.

    RIP Kimo.

  4. Steve says:

Sorry Chuck, your wrong twice.. KIMO (not Kimbo, Liger FFS) Didn’t always come out with the damn cross, and he wasn’t the only UFC fighter to carry a cross, Joe Son did too. He is famous for getting punched in the balls and for being recently charged with gang-rape. maybe carrying the cross wasn’t such a good idea.

RIP Kimo, you were a great warrior. I forgive the Pride 1 fight and the Works. I always remember Kimo thrashing Bam-Bam-Bigelow, that was his finest hour, after crippling Gracies third UFC tilt of course.

  5. liger05 says:

oh shit my bad. Kimo RIP.

Kimo v Bam Bam was a work wasn’t it?

  6. Mark says:

Kimo said it was legit, Bam Bam said in his RF Video shoot interview it was worked UWF-i style.

Did that pro wrestling storylines with real MMA fights promotion he was trying to do ever do a show? I don’t recall. I’d like to see that trainwreck if it did.

    RIP Kimo.

  7. Zack says:

I saw him at UFC 59. He actually thought I was in his seats until I showed him my stub. It’s crazy that just 11 UFCs before that he was in the main event now he didnt even have good seats to the first UFC in CA, 15 mins from HB. All the guys in the original UFCs deserve a lot of respect for blazing the trail.

Also, his fight with Varlens is one of the great come from behind fights.

    RIP Kimo.

  8. Mark says:

Why aren’t many sites reporting this? The sidebar on here doesn’t show all that many stories on it. Is it too unconfirmed for them to want to risk reporting, or do they just not care?

I know the guy was 15 years past his prime, but out of respect all fighters dying young should be a top story. I’m sure with the Brock-heat Kimo is hated for his pro wrestling antics. But he was one of the early UFC superstars for giving Royce the fight of his career and main evented several UFC shows.

  9. Big C says:

Meltzer is reporting that Kimo’s not dead.

  10. Mark says:

Well, it was totally believable that he would die young.

  11. Pierre-Luc Allie says:

Say what you want about Sherdog but they didn’t publish anything on the unfounded rumours of Kimo’s death. TMZ and cagepotato look pretty silly now. On the day of MJ death I was sure that TMZ pronounce MJ’s death on a guess.

  12. SD Jones says:

Is the bar set so low for Sherdog that we congratulate them for not calling a living fighter dead?

  13. Pierre-Luc Allie says:

It’s still setting the bar too high for TMZ, New York Daily News and crappotato.

  14. Rob Maysey says:

I had no choice but to laugh. Yes, the same site that ran not one, but two lengthy retractions (they didn’t call them that, but IN MY OPINION), the Kimo stories ran on Sherdog were clearly retractions, and were not voluntarily run out of the goodness of Sherdog’s heart either.

    http://sherdog.com/news/news/correction-leopoldo-charged-for-possession-of-marijuana-17457

The same site that reports very little to nothing about commissions, hides behind Josh Gross on promoter stories, and privately slanders (IN MY OPINION) sources who helped them dozens and dozens of times.

    Top quality!

  15. Alan Conceicao says:

Given how much of a success this was, I don’t think I have any choice but to do something similar in the near future just to laugh at whoever picks it up.
