(Boxing) Vic Darchinyan wins in Anaheim

Gary Shaw’s ace-in-the-sleeve, Vic Darchinyan, took care of business against Jorge Arce in Anaheim at the Honda Center on Saturday night. The judges had the fight one-sided on their scorecards. More details on the fight can be read at SecondsOut. The fight aired on Showtime.
According to the LA Times, the crowd was estimated at around 5,450 paid. And you thought Affliction had problems drawing in this building a couple of weeks ago. (Apples and oranges comparison, but UFC reportedly drew 7,500 for their Tampa event on Saturday night.)
After Darchinyan’s win over Arce, Nonito Donaire announced that he wants a crack at Darchinyan’s belts. However, Gary Shaw would have none of it. According to Shaw, Evil Vic may be moving up a weight-class or two soon.

Arce’s an excellent showman and self-promoter but he’s always been a fringe prospect. Darchinyan really needs to avenge that Donaire loss before he moves to any other weight class or he will just look like he’s running.

Vic Darchinyan is quite the phenomenon. He shows absolutley ZERO basics, is ass backwards in all regards of the sweet science, and he throws hard, but thudding arm punches. He puts no body or leverage in his punches (believe it or not, he has only one first round KO win) but the man still wins fights against top level opposition. It absolutely baffles me. It might be his awkwardness that does his opponents in, but damn! He definitely has improved since his lost to Nonito Donaire (it especially showed during his fight against Christian Mijares) but he’s so ass backwards as a fighter. But he is entertaining to watch. I agree with Robert on Jorge Arce. Fun fighter to watch, and damn good to boot. But he was never, and will never be, at the absolute top of his class of fighters. I hate to say it, but he might be the Trevor Berbick or James “Bonecrusher” Smith of the flyweight types. Good fighter, but is right under the top of his weight class. Okay, he’s better than Berbick and Smith, but you get my point.
