Mosley/Margarito fight doing big business; will Affliction do the same?

By Zach Arnold | January 20, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

Last Friday on ESPN2 TV, ESPN.com boxing writer Dan Rafael reported that over 17,000 tickets were sold for the Shane Mosley/Antonio Margarito fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Ticket prices are in the $25-$300 range. (Tickets for the Affliction show are more expensive for the Anaheim event at the Honda Center.) Both the LA Times and Boxing Scene have articles questioning whether or not Mosley will be focused going into the fight due to BALCO-related PR issues.

The co-promoters for the boxing event on the 24th are Top Rank and Golden Boy. Intriguingly, Oscar De La Hoya has been promoted in the media for attending Affliction PR media sessions in New York and Los Angeles. However, a quick news search online hasn’t produced many articles covering the appearances.

On a separate boxing note, it appears that it is crunch time in relation to whether or not the Manny Pacquiao/Ricky Hatton fight will be signed. Rafael last Friday contended that the fight would likely happen in early May in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The Guardian newspaper claims that the fight is on.

  1. 45 Huddle says:

This should be a great free fight. Glad to see boxing tickets for a fight like this not being $1,000. Those are reasonable prices.

Does boxing get hurt if Mosley wins this fight? He is another fighter that is much older, and if all these young stars get beat by guys leaving the sport, it could have a negative impact on the public perception of the talent levels of these fighters.

Random – Kid Yamamoto is not fighting in the DREAM Featherweight Tournament. He won’t be ready in time.

  2. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

    Kid: shocking

    No, really, shocking.

    Ok, not so much shocking.

  3. D.Capitated says:

If Mosley wins, he probably goes on to rematch Cotto or fight someone else. In any case, Margarito’s never been a draw on his own.

  4. I’ve been wondering if Oscar was showing up at the press conferences he’s been saying he would.

  5. […] the way, Affliction’s “partners” have reportedly sold 17,000 tickets to the Mosley-Margarit…, whereas blocks of 10 tickets at all price ranges can still purchased through Ticketmaster for […]

  6. Fluyid says:

If Moseley wins, he definitely has a few more big fights in him.

  7. Zack says:

Tito, Trump, De La Hoya, & Fedor were all at the Affliction NYC conference this morning.

  8. IceMuncher says:

Affliction’s PPV is the same day as a fairly big boxing fight, it’s sandwiched between two UFC PPVs, one of which is getting lots of hype, and then they cap it all off by holding a press conference today during Obama’s inauguration.

    Talk about horrible timing.

  9. 45 Huddle says:

Why put on a news conference around the same time as the President being sworn in? Makes no sense, and really bad planning.

IceMuncher is correct. And don’t forget the WEC, which is probably just minor compared to the other items mentioned, but still is important. So is UFC 91 being free on SpikeTV.

  10. ilostmydog says:

I don’t understand why Affliction’s ticket prices are so expensive. Especially with Mosley/Margarito being basically next door with cheaper tickets.

  11. Jim Allcorn says:

Ice & 45 are spot on.

It\’s almost as if this Affliction card has been set up to fail. And fail miserably.

While I realize that Attencio & co. have their backs against the wall, what with having already cancelled their second show once already. They couldn\’t have set themselves up to fail more than if they\’d done so delibeerately.

And it\’s a shame, because it\’s an excellent card. But it\’s not only facing a tremendous amount of competition at both the live gate & on pay television, but it\’s overpriced its seats by a significant amount in comparison to the nearby Margarito-Mosely affair. A huge fight between two of So-Cal\’s most popular fighters in a further chapter in what\’s become this generation\’s version of the Leonard-Hagler-Hearns-Duran series.

All of which, I\’m fairly certain will result in massive losses by Affliction come Saturday night.

  12. mr. Roadblock says:

I’m actually much more excited about Mosley Margarito than Fedor Arlovski. It’s a more intiguing match up. I think Arlovski if he come out aggressive throwin combos has a chance to beat Fedor. But realistically Fedor should win in under two minutes.

Can margarito handle mosleys speed? Can mosley avoid gettng clobbered to tv body and slowed down? Plus he boxing match sets up more interesting machups. Also I think if mosley wins floyd immediately starts making noise about fighting the hatton/manny winner.

  13. skwirrl says:

In reality Margarito Mosley is not competitive. Mosley can’t hurt Margarito. Can’t hurt him even enough to slow him down while he comes in. He’s a great counterpuncher but you can’t counter if the other guy is just constantly throwing punches. This is a nightmare matchup for Mosley. Mosley gets KO’d in 8

  14. […] Affliction turns a profit or not. And Affliction’s partners/underminers in Golden Boy have already sold 17,000 seats to the Shane Mosley vs. Antonio Margarito boxing match in L.A. on the same night as "Day of Reckoning," which should steal a lot of spectators […]

  15. liger05 says:

I cant see Mosley winning this fight. While I think he can counter punch and win some early rounds he does not have enough to stop Margarito moving forward. Cotto was doing well v Margarito but was using so much energy trying to stay away from Margarito. He was boxing clever but but his legs were gone and by the latter rounds he couldnt stop Margarito getting close.

Also Mosley was v poor in his last fight and really should of lost that fight but somehow managed to pull it out from nowhere.

I really wanna see Cotto v Margarito again. Even though I dont think Cotto can win it would still be another great fight!!
