Quote of the Day – Scott LeDoux

By Zach Arnold | December 23, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

He participated in boxing. He participated against Larry Zybysko at Wrestle Rock. But he’s drawn the line with MMA:

Scott LeDoux, who oversees the state boxing and mixed martial arts commission, said he would seek another Ultimate Fighting Competition next summer for Target Center, which last August featured ex-Gophers heavyweight Brock Lesnar and had gross ticket revenue of $2.2 million. Of that, $80,000 went to the commission.

LeDoux, a former heavyweight boxer who spent time in the ring with 11 former world champions, says UFC has replaced boxing in popularity.

“That’s good for the sport and not good for boxing,” he said. “I could never fight in that (UFC) cage because it’s so brutal.”

Speaking of UFC and Minnesota, Jon Fitch was in the headliner for last Summer’s event against Georges St. Pierre. After the contractual dust-up over video game rights with UFC management? Fitch is relegated to dark match status. Thoughts on this from Sherdog, Fightlinker, and MMA Opinion.

I’ll re-post here what I posted in the other thread:

Speaking of prelim bouts that didn’t air live, guess who’s a prelim fighter again? That’s right, it’s Jon Fitch.

In his first fight after his excellent title match against Georges St. Pierre and his first fight since the UFC-AKA contract dispute, Jon Fitch has been relegated to being a prelim fighter on the January 31st event, according to the UFC’s own web site.

Not only is the Fitch fight being slotted below the Parisyan main card bout (in Parisyan’s first fight since he pulled out of a fight at the last minute), not only is the Fitch fight being slotted below the Diaz-Guida main card bout, but freaking Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones is a main card fight while the #2 welterweight in the world is in the prelims. Unbelievable.

I guess the UFC felt that they needed to send even more of a message to Fitch and his management than they already did.

Being relegated to the prelims is something that Fitch has faced before… his first 5 UFC fights were all wins over Brock Larson, Josh Burkman, Thiago Alves, Kuniyoshi Hironaka, and Luigi Fioravanti, and all of them except the Hironaka fight were non-televised prelims.

Now, after 3 more UFC wins (for a total of 8), and one loss to St. Pierre (for a total of 1 UFC loss), Fitch is in the prelims again.

  2. jj says:

maybe the UFC knows they will attract more casual fans by having Bonnar on the main card? they know they will have all the die hard fans regardless if fitch is on there or not, so why not try to pull in a few more ppv buys? we may not like the card lineup, but it is smart for business.

  3. David says:

You guys got a job, and that is to fight the powers that be. So I can’t tell you not to; but as good journalists, and smart individuals (ivan/zach), you certainly know better than to complain about the UFCs practices OVER and OVER at such OBVIOUS business tactics such as hiding Fitch in the dark.

Eh, you’re still gonna be talking about the UFC in the future and reporting on MMA so unless you do something, like refuse to report on anything UFC related, it just ends up being MORE press and giving the UFC MORE and MORE power to do what they want.

    Interesting prespective?

  4. IceMuncher says:

I don’t think it’s much of a snub. I think all the fights on the main card are better than or equal to Fitch vs Gono, with the lone exception of Bonnar vs Jones. Bonnar is one of the faces of the sport and hasn’t fought in well over a year, so putting him on the main card is pretty meh.

  5. The Gaijin says:

“Bonnar is one of the faces of the sport”

Granted he fought in the big TUF fight with Forrest, but that was ages ago. I don’t think he really holds that place in too many fans hearts anymore. He’s been injured, fought poorly and suspended for steroids since that time.

Remember they were hyping Fitch as one of the best fighters on the planet and a total beast before his spirited battle with GSP…Bonnar isn’t even top 10 in his division.

  6. Steve says:

    Forget Fitch
    How about that Greg Gagne?

He’s in a rage, he wants Brody, he wants him in a cage.

  7. KiDFear says:

Forget Jay-Z, Larry Z. can flow.
