WEC 6/1 Arco Arena (Sacramento)

Post all comments about the show here.

It’s becoming clear that as bad as the reputation is online for New Jersey MMA fans, the reputation for Sacramento’s MMA fans seems to be well-lived once again… albeit the fact that the WEC crowd tonight was better than past UFC crowds in the town.

30-27 on two scorecards for Rob McCullough winning? Brutal. Overall, a show that started out slow and finished out very strong. The elephant in the room was acknowledged by PBP man Todd Harris in regards to a lot of people watching MMA for the first time this weekend.

Media reaction

  1. The New York Post: Faber defends WEC title in thriller
  2. Sherdog: He’s a standup guy – Faber beats Pulver to keep WEC title
  3. Bloody Elbow: I went to a WEC event tonight, but it really felt like a UFC show
  4. The Long Beach Press-Telegram: Featherweights put on a show that lives up to the billing
  5. The Sacramento Bee: A raucous Arco Arena crowd helps set the tone during WEC’s Sunday night event (crowd of 12,682)
  6. CBS Sports: Faber survives Pulver, defends title in WEC war

I already feel like my MMA mind has been cleared by watching the opening of the WEC. Much better.

  2. 45 Huddle says:

    And this first fight stinks.

  3. Iain says:

Total-MMA is liveblogging this and doing an AIM chat if people are interested.

  4. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

The next two fights made up for the first fight though.

  5. cyph says:

Sick fight so far. Maeda is no joke.

  6. 45 Huddle says:

After 2 rounds of Torres/Maeda, I think I am finally a fan of the Bantamweights. Great fight.

  7. Dave says:

Torres/Maeda is a strong FOTY contender, and Faber/Pulver was nothing to scoff at. This was a cleansing after EXC.

  8. Fan Futbol says:

    Torres-Maeda was fantastic. Wow.

Faber was just too much for Pulver, but man is Lil’ Evil a tough nut. Good fight.

  9. Ivan Trembow says:

Excellent show. Faber vs. Pulver was an amazing fight, with great performances by both fighters.

  10. IceMuncher says:

    Great show.

Lol, I love Torres. The guy is trying to hurt his opponent every single chance he gets. If he’s on the bottom, he’s either throwing short punches or he’s kicking their thigh. It reminded me of my neighbor’s little terrier that used to bite and pull on the back of my pants leg and never let go.

  11. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Really funny that this card also featured an eye jab and a nasty cut…

    Odd weekend.

Now we get to see what happens on the “cursed” UFC 85 card. Assuming there are enough fighters left standing to go on with the show.

  12. Chuck says:

The WEC event was a good fight card, especially the last two bouts. I don’t think the Pulver-Faber fight was quite the BEST FIGHT IN HISTORY as it was hyped up to be, but it was damn good. Not Fight Of The Year though, too one-sided. I still think MMA fight of the year thus far is Cung Le vs. Frank Shamrock, but the Faber-Pulver and Torres-Maeda fights were damn good.
