Lauzon vs. Florian and new season of TUF is tonight

By Zach Arnold | April 2, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

Make sure to get your predictions in today for tonight’s UFN card. There has been a lot of media coverage leading up to this event, so Lauzon vs. Florian definitely has a big-match feel to it.

Xyience has been officially sold:

The sale price will cover only part of the secured debt at Xyience, debtor attorney Laurel Davis said after the hearing. As a result, unsecured creditors and stockholders in Xyience will recover none of their money, she said.

  1. The Gaijin says:

Let me guess who’ll be recovering their investment from Xyience… 🙂

  2. cyph says:

Great fight night lineup! It’s about time the UFC gives something back to the fans.

  3. cyph says:

Le and Shamrock made $200k and 300k, respectively.

Wow. If Strikeforce can stay profitable, I expect the UFC will have to raise their pay or a lot of fighters will be making an exodus. I wonder how many fights Anderson Silva has got left? Dana better hold on to that golden goose.

  4. David says:

“Anderson Silva has got left? Dana better hold on to that golden goose.” – That is the thing, he will hold on. Why else would he treat Black House with so much respect. Politics in the entertainment industry are the most unique out of all organizations, except for politics itself 🙂

  5. sebastian says:

I can’t decide if I should watch TUF or not.
I don’t like the show, the reality portions is bad and the fights are usually nothing special, but there’s bound to be a lot of discussion among fans I’d be left out of and there are sides of Forrest and Quinton that could be interesting.

  6. Jim Allcorn says:

I’m sorry, but I had to chuckle after reading that piece on Jason DeLucia’s “Hybrid Fighting”. I just don’t see how he & his partners expect this to take off? All it sounds like to me is MMA-lite. Or semi-contact MMA. Ugh!

That’s all we need is for this to gain in popularity & become a staple in all those storefront/shopping plaza “McDojos”. Then we’ll have tens of thousands of teenagers, off season soccer kids & six year olds running around saying that they’re Mixed MartialArts “fighters” … *GAG*

  7. Zack says:

I for one can’t wait to see what gets thrown in the pool first!!

  8. Tomer Chen says:

    That was and…interesting conversation…

James Irvin: You want to fight in the parking lot? We can do that!
Joe Rogan: Uh…we don’t need to do that…

Honestly, that wasn’t a bad stoppage as it did look like Houston Alexander was out cold for a second and he likely wasn’t going to last much longer given his spread-eagle pose even if he was conscious.

  9. PizzaChef says:

Matt Hamill with the “No means yes” choke.

  10. 45 Huddle says:

Both the Irvin & Alves stoppages were the correct calls.

  11. Tomer Chen says:

🙁 @ Karo losing. Ah well, what can you do? Alves may end up becoming a challenger for the Serra/St. Pierre vs. Fitch winner, though. He’s got a good streak going and another good win against a Koscheck or Sanchez level guy may warrant a #2 contender slot and title shot.

  12. The Gaijin says:

I thought the Irvin stoppage was fine, but I’m not so sure about Alves…

  13. 45 Huddle says:

Frank Edgar needs to move down to Featherweight. The only thing that hurt him in that fight was his size.

As for Maynard, he is still a submission waiting to happen.

  14. The Gaijin says:

Frankie Edgar really looked bad out there tonight. He looked really gassed at the end of the 2nd and for the entire 3rd round.

I think I either really overrated Edgar or underrated Maynard – or maybe both. But 45’s right, he’s just asking to get snared by someone with decent sub-game.

  15. 45 Huddle says:

Perhaps I’m just an Edgar nuthugger, but I think he was exhausted because of that size difference.

  16. The Gaijin says:

I guess I just think of the Edgar that fought a complete barnburner with Griffin and did stop until the final bell. Though I guess Tyson used to be a FW, so I guess he’s not the biggest of LW’s.

Maybe the elevation had something to do with it?

  17. Tomer Chen says:

Pretty dominant win by Kenny Florian. I think he may be the LW division policeman, being good enough to test potential challengers to Penn or Sherk, but not likely ever beating them for the title.

  18. The Gaijin says:

The more I see them, I don’t know if I really like either of the stoppages in Alves-Karo or Irvin-Alexander. As I read someone else comment, Karo definitely deserved to be given the benefit of weathering the storm before Mazzagatti stepped in. And seeing the Alexander fight on replay a few times, it really looked like a flash knockdown and that he’d regained his composure.

  19. Grape Knee High says:

I thought both the Houston and Karo fights could have gone on a little longer.

The Houston fight, because I think the guy just plain sucks and wouldn’t mind him really getting embarrassed out there.

The Karo fight, because it was a borderline stoppage. Not necessarily a bad call, but I don’t think anyone would have blamed the ref if he let it go on a little longer.

The Maynard/Edgar fight was simply one determined by size, just as Maynard said after the fight; the last time I remember someone admitting that size (rather than skill) was the primary factor for a win was Hughes after he beat Sakurai.

I also have to admit I really like the format of the new TUF season so far, although I’m sure it will settle down into the same old, tired format once the first set of fights are complete.

  20. IceMuncher says:

Thiago Alves and Gray Maynard impressed me the most tonight.

Iirc, that’s the first time Karo’s been stopped. It was a good call imo, he dropped like dead weight and then shifted onto his side in a turtle position. The ref is forced to stop it at that point. I was disappointed that there weren’t that many leg kicks though. I love to watch Alves go to work with them.

Gray looks much improved; that was much, much better striking than I expected from him. He’s got a great set of fundamental skills/abilities (very strong, great endurance, fantastic wrestling, and decent hands), if he polishes up his BJJ game I think he’ll go far.

  21. The Gaijin says:

p.s. “rape choke”??? – nice work Rogan you jackass.

  22. The Gaijin says:

“Iirc, that’s the first time Karo’s been stopped.”

First time he’s been stopped in the UFC and second time in his pro career.

He was TKO’d by Sherk (a long while back).

  23. cyph says:

Houston Alexander’s Cinderella run is over. I’m starting to think that he did get lucky with Keithe Jardine.

I understand quick stoppages for low-ranked fighters, but the referees really need to give highly ranked fighters a couple more seconds.

  24. Zack says:

“Honestly, that wasn’t a bad stoppage as it did look like Houston Alexander was out cold for a second and he likely wasn’t going to last much longer given his spread-eagle pose even if he was conscious.”

He was just playing opossum before going for the gogoplata.

  25. Dave2 says:

Houston Alexander was nothing special. He caught a Jardine who took him lightly by surprise and he knocked out Glass Chin Alessio Sakara (I can’t believe this guy was a boxer before. He must have really sucked at his profession. Though sometimes, brawlers can catch boxers by surprise in MMA. See Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, gold medalist Pan-American Games amateur boxer vs. Sokoudjou, a judoka that likes to throw leather.)
