Trouble in Tacoma

By Zach Arnold | February 23, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

Jan “The Giant” Nortje just about finished Bob Sapp’s fighting career tonight.

Sapp reportedly was scheduled to fight for the DREAM debut event on 3/15 at Saitama Super Arena. K-1 and DSE cannot be happy about this outcome.

I’m starting to regret the fact that I brought up a possible analogy between Bob Sapp and Kimbo Slice.

  1. The News Tribune (Tacoma): Sapp loses quickly in MMA main event
  2. The Seattle Times: Sapp’s cage match has abrupt ending
  3. Dave Meltzer: Ruinous homecoming for Sapp

Zach, come on now. It’s Japan we’re talking about. They won’t mention it, they won’t care if he’s hurt, they will just put him in the ring to lose to Mirko. Those people don’t care.

  2. ilostmydog says:

Just replace Sapp with Julius Long and hope people don’t really care that they aren’t the same person.

  3. Matt says:

Sapp absolutely does not have the heart for fighting. I feel so sorry for him!!

  4. Jim Allcorn says:

Well Matt, I don’t know about Sapp’s heart ( though I do tend to agree with you regarding his ticker ), but what I am certain of is his COMPLETE lack of a fighter’s chin. It’s almost comical in the sense that he’s such a massive human being who looks as if he’s been sculpted out of a wall of marble, but his chin is made out of fine bone china!

  5. The Gaijin says:

Sapp has completely regressed as a fighter (both K-1 & mma). It’s bizarre to think that he was actually much better when he was a total newb and not softened by all the fame.

He’s absolutely terrified of taking a shot and the gunshyness is a total killer for him – he’s supposed to intimidate his opponents.

This is the guy that Fedor is “ducking”? What a crock of sh*t that rumour is…He’d get eaten alive in less time than Zuluzinho.

  6. Dukes says:

Ahhhhh….isn’t DREAM a Japanese organization? As such, a fighter’s record means nothing in terms of a draw. Sapp’s record could be 11-45 and they would put him on a card.

Remember, it’s not about the competition in Japan, it’s about the *entertainment* and the *spectacle* – something USA fans have been criticized for lacking the sophistication to distinguish.

    What? You want proof? OK:

    Giant Silva
    Andy Olgun
    Dos Caras

    You get the point.

  7. Zach Arnold says:

They can’t be happy with the outcome because:

    a) He lost and he lost quickly.
    b) He’s supposedly got a bad hamstring.

  8. The Gaijin says:

And lest we forget he lost to Jan freakin Nortje!

The guy’s a total K-1 jobber…that’s not great for his reputation over there. I’m still baffled that he’s the same guy that beat Ernesto Hoost twice…

  9. Zurich says:

Wow.. and I watched the two matches between Sapp and Hoost last night. Not to mention the legendary fight with Nogueria… I can’t believe its the same guy…

  10. ilostmydog says:

    @ Dukes:

Bobby Ologun, not Andy. Andy, his brother, is actually a pretty good fighter.

  11. Dave2 says:

Yeah I knew that Andy was Bobby’s brother and fought he was just a can but I’ve seen Andy in K-1 MAX Japan. He’s actually pretty good. Is Andy actually a real kickboxer or just another celebrity-turned-fighter in Japan?

  12. safari_punch says:

    Zach,

They weren’t planning on putting Sapp in against Crocop on the 15th? Who would be an alternative? Nortje? Hunt? Ologun?

  13. Grape Knee High says:

I have to agree with the people that DREAM probably couldn’t care less that Sapp lost in a relatively obscure US show that probably less than 20,000 watched.

The type of Japanese fan that Sapp would draw in are exactly the type to not care about record, much less a US show. Japanese fans barely cared about the US K-1 Dynamite show; why would they care about Strikeforce?

If he got injured during that match that is a different story.
