UFC Fight Night Live – Play By Play

By Mike David | January 23, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

UFC Fight Night Live, from The Palms in Las Vegas, NV

Televised Card:

We’re starting from the Palms with Nate Diaz vs. Alvin Robinson

Round 1: Nate Diaz opened the action with an immediate takedown, pressing Robinson against a post of the cage. Robinson worked a guillotine which he used to stand up, but Diaz picked him up and slammed him to the canvas. Diaz escaped the guillotine with 3:30 remaining, as the two scrambled for position. Diaz took top position and slipped into side control, but Robinson rolled out. Diaz attempted an omoplata during the scramble, but Robinson ended up in Diaz’s guard with 2:00 remaining. Diaz secures a triangle from the bottom, submitting Alvin Robinson at the 3:39 mark.

Winner: Nate Diaz – Submission – 3:39 of Round 1

-Joe Rogan interviews Nate Diaz. The newly-unscarred Nick Diaz stands behind him.

-Brock Lesnar promo video shown. “Aww, he broke Tim Sylvia’s arm. Who cares?” On the one hand, the interviews build Brock as an amateur wrestling stand out. On the other hand, they show WWE clips of him powerbombing women and dropping backbreakers on jobbers. Was the shark F5 video not available?

Thiago Tavares vs. Michihiro Omigawa

Round 1: Tavares with a slam takedown. Omigawa gets to his feet, but Tavares hops on his back and uses his weight to bring him down to the canvas. Tavares works for a choke, but Omigawa defends and stands up, eventually shaking Tavares off. Tavares retakes his back almost immediately, and lifts him for a slam. Omigawa is obviously at a strength disadvantage in this fight. Omigawa scrambles to top position, holding on for dear life from Tavares’ guard. Omigawa eventually stands and attempts a few punches as time winds down.

10-9 Tavares

Round 2: Third time’s the charm for Tavares’ takedown attempts, but nothing came of the [limited] action in this round. Omigawa stuffed two early attempts which were interrupted by tentative standup by both fighters. Omigawa moved forward like a “karate robot,” as Joe Rogan said, but Tavares connected on more punches.

10-9 Tavares

Round 3: Tavares secures an early takedown, but can’t pass guard. The “Yoshido” dojo, as Goldberg called it, would be proud. Omigawa secures a takedown from his knees, and holds on within Tavares’ guard. Omigawa stands up, but Tavares cuts him on the forehead with a right up-kick. Omigawa secures a takedown as Goldberg confuses Japanese with Portuguese, and finishes with some unimpressive ground and pound that doesn’t do any damage.

10-9 Omigawa

Winner: Thiago Tavares – Judges’ Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

-Stallone interview, pimping Rambo. Oh no, he gave away the whole plot!

Drew McFedries vs. Patrick Cote

Round 1: Both men come out swinging. McFedries is throwing bombs, while Cote looks to be more precise thus far. McFedries slows down and throws three precise inside leg kicks that land flush, and follows up with a big right hand that lands flush. Cote shakes it off, and absolutely crushes McFedries with a right hand, following up with unanswered punches on the ground. The ref jumps in as McFedries covers for dear life.

Winner: Patrick Cote – TKO (Strikes) – 1:44 of Round 1

-Gratuitous Rachelle Leah shot in the crowd, announcing All Access: Brock Lesnar debuting on Jan 31. Much better than seeing Sly Stallone out there

-We’re in the prelims before going to Burkman vs. Swick. Pellegrino vs. Crane on now.

Mike Swick vs. Josh Burkman

Burkman is out first, to the sounds of “Remember the Name.” Rogan calls him thick, which where I come from is a euphemism for fatty.

Swick out second to 2Pac. Takes off his hat to reveal a haircut straight out of the movie House Party.

Mazzagatti, with the toughest job in the Octagon, wipes some drool off of Swick’s mouth before Buffer gives the official introductions. Buffer gives the hard sell for Rambo, then gets to introducing the people who are actually fighting.
Round 1: Burkman charges Swick and muscles him against the cage in the clinch. Swick connects with knees, and reverses position. The two jockey for position until Mazzagatti separates them. Burkman lands a takedown when Swick attempts a guillotine, but Swick stands right back up. Mazzagatti separates the pair once again. Burkman attempts an Anderson Silva-like elbow that Swick dodges. Burkman attempts a TKD kick but misses.

10-9 Burkman

Round 2: After more sluggish clinchwork ended by a Mazzagatti separation, Swick lands a head kick but doesn’t follow up on a dazed Burkman. Swick lands a few leg kicks, and they go back into the clinch. Guess what happens – Mazzagatti breaks it up! Very close round since nothing happened, but Swick landed the better strike.

10-9 Swick

Round 3: After another Mazzagatti separation, they finally start to trade…and then Swick clinches again. The momentum appears to be with Burkman at this point, but he’s struggling mightily to secure a takedown. Swick throws a few kicks that don’t land, as Burkman fakes another back elbow strike. More wild swinging and missing, as Burkman tries another takedown that gets stuffed. Swick connects with a knee with 30 seconds remaining, and Burkman attempts another takedown that Swick stuffs. 10 seconds left and it’s anybody’s guess as to who will win this fight.

10-9 Swick

Winner: Mike Swick – Majority Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-29)
