PRIDE 33 kicked ass. It’s a shame that it didn’t do well on PPV. The PRIDE Otaku came out in full force for that event in Vegas. Considering that it’s usually mostly the hardcores that follow PRIDE, they did surprisingly well at the gate. PRIDE 32 is ranked #11 all-time at the gate in Vegas for MMA events and PRIDE 33 ranked #12 (and that’s including all the UFC events that came after these events). That means that at the time PRIDE 32 was out, it hit #6 in Vegas and PRIDE 33 at the time hit #9 in Vegas. It’s awesome to know that we had such a dedicated fanbase for Japanese MMA in America. Not dedicated enough to achieve good PPV buys though. Creating new fans instead of just relying on the already initiated was necessary to do well commercially.

Every single one of mine votes won, with the caveat that I’d have voted WEC promotion of the year (in terms of improvement and quality of cards/fights) if it had been an option.

Duke, you are thinking of PRIDE 32 (in terms of intermission). PRIDE 33 didn’t have any heavy intermission as far as my memory serves me. There were fights after fights.

Pride 33 was the best event of the year? What?! Does no one remember the AWFUL commentating and that mind-numbing 45 minute intermission in the middle of the PPV?
