Real man of genius: Roy Jones Jr.

By Zach Arnold | December 30, 2007 | Print This

We have a boxing page on our site that is automatically updated with the latest news, but I do apologize for not talking more about boxing on the main page here at Fight Opinion.

With that said, this is a story I can’t pass up.

Roy Jones Jr., who loves cockfighting, apparently loves dogfighting as well.

“I was (letting them fight) to a degree, but not like that serious,” Jones Jr. told the Daily News after reporters had peppered the light-heavyweight with questions about the Knicks and his fight with Trinidad. “I just let my dogs get down five, 10 minutes, 15 minutes. Maybe like the longest I let them go was a half-hour, but I never let them fight to the death ’cause I can’t take that.

“I knew about it, but I wasn’t going to take it that seriously. I couldn’t see my dogs fight to the death ’cause they were too close of friends to me.”

Alright, this may bring down a lot of heat on me, but I really have nothing against cockfighting. Although at 46 my own is a wee bit past it’s prime, my member sports a 49-0 record. Just like former Heavyweight Champion … OK,OK. Enough with THAT lame analogy & attempt at humor, but I couldn’t resist. My apologies.

    Now, onto the serious stuff.

While I think dogfighting is reprehensible, cockfighting to me isn’t. While I’m far from an expert on the subject, one would think that those damned birds would much rather go out fighting than wind up on some Tyson Foods corporate farm facility stuck in a tiny cage & practically force fed their hormone enhanced feed until their plump enough for the slaughter.
Now, obviously, the fighting birds are of a diffent breed that those that become roasters, but still … If we’re going to be so concerned about fighting cocks humane existence, then we all better start paying out the extra $$$ for only free range chicken at our grocers or our concern is hypocritical.
Sorry, but I’ve seen how these fighting cock breeders/owners raise & treat their birds ( in documentary footage, not firsthand BTW ) & it’s almost honorable in many ways.
Besides, the fighting is very much in the bird’s nature. If they weren’t fighting in front of a crowd, then they’d certainly be fighting in the dirt of the barnyard. Roosters are just highly aggressive creatures by nature.
And, I’m sorry, but it’s not as if they’re very high up on the list of sentient beings either. So, it’s not as if the gamecocks are contemplating their fates before each match.

There is no way that you could pass this article up… freakin hilarious

Wow, what a wazzock (Roy Jones).

As for cockfighting somehow being more acceptable than dog fighting. Plain and simple, it isn’t.

Come on people, dogs are fuzzy and lick your hand, chickens are just ornery and strange.
Al the difference you need right there. And the above makes a good point. If your so damned worried about the health and well being of chickens you best be fighting to shut down all the factory farms and support free range organic

    Jim:

I agree with you 100% and have been making the same argument about Tyson chickens to people for a long time. It is a complete double standard. Also, having seen cock fights before I will tell you that they are not that interesting and the birds rarely die, they just get scratched up and then stitched.

You couldn’t make stuff like this up! What a complete fool.

Not fighting to the death but fighting the same fight for 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes w/o allowing the killing is COMPLETELY acceptable. What did he cork their teeth like Peter Pan or muzzle them so they frolicked like puppies? Thanks for clearing up any discrepancies Roy, I almost thought you were a bad guy.

  7. December 30th, 2007 at 3:24 pm Krav Maga 411 Says:

I think we should throw Roy Jones Jr in an octagon with a 300lb fighting Ostrich and put it on pay per view. Just a note, Ostriches can kill you with a kick and are known for the excellent head movement, in effect rendering Roy’s jab useless.;-)

    Thanks for your kind words.
Honestly, I’m not suggesting that everyone run out & purchase a pair of gamecocks, some spurs & a jump into the scene. But, I just don’t believe that dogfighting & cockfighting are the same thing. Far from it.
I can appreciate that many don’t echo these feelings & they certainly have every right to their opinion, but I just felt the need to voice mine.

  9. December 30th, 2007 at 6:45 pm ilostmydog Says:

How is letting them fight for 10-15 minutes and not to the death any different from actual dogfighting? Answer: it’s not. Most dogfights last 20 minutes at most and are not fights to the death. Deaths mostly happen when the dogs fights for 30 min+ or are killed by their owners after losing a fight. Roy Jones is an idiot.

    5. F Griffin

    7. L Machida
    8. R Sokoudjou
    9. T Silva
    10. R Evans
    11. T Ortiz
    12. H Alexander

Based on this list of the top UFC LHWs, some proposed match-ups:

    1. Q Jackson (#1) vs F Griffin (#5):
I thought Jardine deserved the shot, but Griffin’s more experienced and more popular…

    2. M Rua (#6) vs R Evans (#10):
A chance for Rua to showcase his skills, and a chance for Evans to prove he belongs in the top tier.

    3. K Jardine (#4) vs T Silva (#9):
    Winner is the #1 contender.

    4. W Silva (#3) vs T Ortiz (#11):
2 waning stars who desperately need to impress.

    5. R Sokoudjou (#8) vs H Alexander(#12):
PRIDE’s 2-hit wonder vs UFC’s 2-hit wonder. Both knocked out some badasses before being exposed on the ground…

    6. C Liddell (#2) vs L Machida (#7):
If winnner wins impressively, he’s the next contender after Jardine/T Silva.
