    Re: Silva/Liddell

Does anyone know if Wandy is actually training with Randy Couture or just training at Xtreme Couture? I think this small point could be the difference maker in this fight.

If Wandy’s been training with Couture and Couture comes out and corners him for this fight, I think Wandy might be able to overcome his lack of reach with a solid gameplan. Without Couture himself involved, I’m leaning towards Liddell in this fight.

The other wild card in this match is if Liddell will be willing to take Silva down to the ground and take a safe win. If Chuck is damaged or tired and Wandy is able to do it, I’m sure Wandy will be willing to take to Chuck to the ground.

There is a better chance of an asteroid hitting Mandalay Bay, than there is Chuck winning via Arona-esque lay & pray.

  4. CaptainAmerica1967 says:

Wanderlei Silva is training directly with Randy Couture and Wanderlei helped train with Randy for Randy’s fight against Gabe Gonzaga.

Wanderlei is going to win this fight!

  5. ilostmydog says:

Who cares if Wandy is working with Couture or not? He’s got Shawn Tompkins working as his full-time sparring partner and striking coach. That’s the best training a striker could ask for right there. I’d be surprised if he didn’t tighten up Wandy’s game significantly, seeing as how he drilled Hendo on how to successfully exploit the holes in his game earlier this year.

  6. 45 Huddle says:

I think Chuck Liddell is so washed up at this point that no matter what game plan Silva has, he will beat him. Liddell doesn’t have the KO power left in his hands. Of course, some people disagree with this line of thinking, but I will be proven right on Dec 29th.

  7. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Well, if he stops boxing like a trained bear and starts punching like a boxer, then he won’t need to be pulling KO power out of his hands anymore.

  8. Don says:

Grape, even if Liddell is willing to take him down he wouldn’t “take a safe win.” I don’t think either has a big advantage in wrestling beyond Chuck’s spawls, and he’s a jiu jitsu blue belt; Wandy is a black. Just as importantly Silva has a lot more in-fight experience on the ground.

  9. IceMuncher says:

I keep changing my mind on the Silva and Liddell fight. I think Silva will win, but Chuck is still incredibly dangerous standing despite the way he’s looked in recent losses.

  10. Grape Knee High says:

    Don:

Liddell is supposedly a purple. Also, while Wandy’s JJ is solid, he definitely has an honorary black. Seriously, what legit BJJ black belt has ever achieved that status for not getting submitted by a judoka in an MMA match?

I’m also not saying Liddell’s wrestling or top game is strong — especially since we’ve never seen it — but neither are Wandy’s takedown defense, sweeps or his ability to stand up from guard. And let’s face it, Wandy seems to end up on his back in quite a few of his fights. Going to the ground could be Liddell’s safest way to victory without risking a career-ending KO. Even if he loses, losing while grappling is probably advantageous to his career than losing by KO.

    ilostmydog:

I hope you’re right, because I’ll be one happy mofo this weekend if Wandy beats Liddell.

  11. StreitigKaiser says:

Man, those Silva-Liddell odds are shit. I think Liddell is getting way too much credit, he sould at least be breaking even if not at a +120 line.

  12. Mike David (Euthyphro) says:

Wow — Clementi looks like a great bet at +200
