Randy Couture meets with the Green Bay Packers

By Zach Arnold | December 9, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports just wrote an article talking about the meeting between Randy Couture and Brett Favre. According to Glazer, Couture is Favre’s top sports idol.

McCarthy set up the surprise speaker perfectly. He talked to the team about fighting through adversity and what it’s like to battle through together before rolling in a highlight film of America’s most beloved mixed martial artist. The players whooped it up as Couture slammed, choked, punched and elbowed victim after victim.

“Then after the tape ended, all the sudden Randy walked into the room… you could hear a pin drop,” said McCarthy. “They were shocked. I think it took a few seconds to sink in that the guy was in the room.”

The Packers defeated the Oakland Raiders 38-7 on Sunday at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

It just shows how far the sport has come in such a short period of time. There’s no way this would of been possible in 2005, probably not even in 2006.

  2. sebastian says:

Is it the sport or is it Randy? There’s nobody like him in MMA.

[Is it the sport or is it Randy?]

Stupid question on a lot of levels, and you contradict yourself in the last sentence.

Of course it’s the sport, you think the Packers want to meet with him because he’s a NCAA runner-up?

Not really stupid, considering that the answer is elements of both sport and Couture (given that Favre is the old ironman in his sport and he sees a mirror image of himself in Couture in MMA).

  5. Body_Shots says:

Of course part of it is because Couture is an unbelievable athlete and person but it’s the sport that gave him the platform to show that.

There’s no way anybody cares about Couture if he’s still coaching wrestling at Oklahoma.

  6. SamScaff says:

And if Randy wasnt an MMA fighter, would it be some other fighter??

    I dont think so.

That tells you thats its not JUST the sport.

[And if Randy wasnt an MMA fighter, would it be some other fighter??]

Why not? I believe Liddell did something similar with the Chargers.

My point remains, it’s because the sport is now at a level where the figures in it can be widely admired. That wasn’t the case 2 years ago or maybe even a year ago. Where were the Packers when Couture went on his first amazing run in 2003?

    Randy hasn’t transcended the sport, he isn’t a Ali-like figure – let’s be real.

  8. Spencer Fern says:

My impression is that pro athletes spend most of their spare time playing video games and watching TV. They probably buy just about every ppv that comes on, so it isn’t surprising to hear that they watch MMA.

What surprises me a little is when you hear athletes say they would be afraid to do MMA. I mean, football is at least as dangerous.

The difference is that fighters go in to the ring by themselves. That takes unusual character.

  9. Wes Hubartt says:

    Fedor would kill him!

  10. Dave says:

As a 47-year-old with increasingly bad knees and back, both Randy Couture and Brett Favre are inspirations to me. I admire them as athletes and as individuals.

  11. I’m not sure that I’d want to have a guy who just quit his organization in the middle of a contract as a special speaker.

The initial reports about Couture being requested were back in September, so this was no real surprise.

  13. winklepicker says:

Favre would submit Couture early in the second round. Either that or he’d throw four interceptions. That’s why we love him.
