Quotes of the week

By Zach Arnold | November 7, 2007

Mike Pyle on Elite XC:

Mouth: I would assume this is the final fight on your contract?

Pyle: Yes, to answer your question from before, this is the final fight on my contract. Gary Shaw and those guys might be under the impression, because I haven’t really had a chance to talk with them, that this is my last fight with them. This is my last fight on my contract, which means I’m not going to work with them unless other things…You understand what I’m saying?

Mouth: Yes absolutely, so does it make you upset when someone like Gina Carano are being—

Pyle: THANK YOU! Thank you very much. This is a woman! I’m being put behind a woman to be on the undercard. I don’t have time for that man! That, right there gives me the idea that they don’t…and some of the people they chose to promote can’t even stay out of f—ing jail long enough to make their fight.

Mouth: Wow! Well that’s true, yeah that’s true.

Pyle: I don’t have time to be put behind people like that! Not to take anything away from Gina, Gina’s my girl, but right now this is a man’s sport. This is a man’s world right now in this game and that’s all there is to it. Who else am I going to be put behind? I feel like I’ve earned my spot in the game. Look at my record, I have fights against Quinton [Jackson], John Fitch, Andrei Semenov, Shonie Carter…I’ve been around the world fighting dude. I fought, you know?

Mouth: Right, no, absolutely, but I can kind of understand the pushing of Gina just because it is such a rarity and I assume they want to hook people with that.

Pyle: Well, I mean, you take a room full of guys and who are they going to watch brawl, Mike Pyle or a chick?

Mouth: That’s a tough call actually. I would assume most people would want to watch the chick brawl.

Pyle: Yeah well, this is the thing: Gina can get down.

Mouth: Yeah

Pyle: This is one out of a handful of those chicks that can really scrap. The rest of them just look like shit, but there are some that can get down and Gina is one of them and she is very entertaining with that. But still, she is a woman and I don’t have time for that man. I can’t be put behind a woman and I will stand behind that until the day I die.

  1. Dave says:

He sounds like a rather enlightened fellow.

  2. Sean says:

I wonder if it also pisses Pyle off when he sees a woman driving a car?

  3. Dru Down says:

“I would assume most people would want to watch the chick brawl.”

    That’s absolute gold.

Pyle reminds me of Nick Diaz with his recent interview style, showcased nicely above. What is it about these EXC fighters?

  4. Peter H. says:

Somebody’s gotta be on the Undercard.

  5. klown says:

Never heard of this loser and hopefully never will again.

  6. Kev says:

Still, just to play contrarian, Pyle has a point. Until EXC has a real women’s division, Carano isn’t being utilized for much other than as a sideshow attraction.

  7. RL Dookie says:

I’m looking forward to watching Jake Shields beat the shit out of that guy on Saturday.

  8. Zack says:

Another reason to root for Shields. Way to drum up some heat Zach 🙂

  9. David says:

    Bake me a pie Pyle

  10. Sergio says:

I don’t care what any of you, sans Kev, say: Pyle is right.

  11. Pontus says:

Mike Pyle almost sounds like Borat.

I wonder about Gina’s plowing skills.

  12. 45 Huddle says:

Mike Pyle is correct. It isn’t even like Carano is one of the top women out there. She is purely there for her sex appeal. I could see if EliteXC was pusshing Tara LaRosa, that would be one thing… But they aren’t.

If I was him, I would be pissed off too that I am being pushed behind a “sex symbol”….

  13. Ian Dean says:

    LOL @ Sean

With comments like that is Mike Pyle’s next fight is going to be in Saudi Arabia?

I can’t stand Gina Carano and the way she gets away with blue murder. however those comments were ill thought out.

Plus it doesn’t do anything to enhance his reputation or help him get a contract elsewhere by coming out as a kind of borderline misogynist.

  14. It’s not just the Carano thing. He’s indicting EliteXC for affiliating themselves with unsavory characters and positioning themselves as a sideshow by promoting female fighters as a sexy event rather than as a distinct sport.

I’m all for a women’s league or women’s division within a major promotion, but at the moment, there are not enough fighters in any organization or among all organizations to make it anything but an exhibition sport.

If you’re getting pushed off the card, and feel like that’s affecting your ability to make money in that organization, then I think you’re going to want to consider other options. Nothing wrong with that, despite his poor choice of words that, when read, seem to indicate a strong misogynist bent.

I’m going to listen to the archive stream off of http://www.liveaudiowrestling.com/ now, and I think it will be interesting to see what the tone is when you hear it rather than when you read it.

  15. Grape Knee High says:

“If I was him, I would be pissed off too that I am being pushed behind a “sex symbol”….”

This coming from the guy who before every UFC event discusses the male fighters’ bodies and whether they have “the look” or not! 😛

  16. Rohan says:

“Mike Pyle is correct. It isn’t even like Carano is one of the top women out there. She is purely there for her sex appeal. I could see if EliteXC was pusshing Tara LaRosa, that would be one thing… But they aren’t.

If I was him, I would be pissed off too that I am being pushed behind a “sex symbol”….”

Two words, Ken Shamrock. MMA as is boxing and many other sports is about drawing money. Some of the time the best draws are the best fighters. Some of the time they’re not. Carano has got herself over and in the promotors opinion is a draw, much more of a draw than than.

    Pyle should get over it.

Come to think of it he sounds exactly like some pro-wrestling veteran who’s slipping down the card who keeps complaining the new main eventer can’t work. Sadsack.

  17. GB says:

He probably didn’t phrase his complaints correctly. The issue is not being under-promoted at the expense of women. The issue is that the current level of women’s competition is way lower than its male counterpart. this is even more ludicrous if the affected fighter is someone like Pyle. You see better fights at a Gladiator Challenge than anything from Carano, LaRosa, etc. That’s the plain truth and by acknowledging it you are not discriminating against all women or questioning their right to go into MMA.

  18. cyphron says:

Good looking people sell tickets. Strippers, TV anchors, actors, athletes, fighters, etc. If you’re an entertainer and you look good, you will get the push over other equally talented entertainers. Anna Kournikova anyone?

Mike Pyle should really live in this world and get his caveman mentality in check.

  19. Zack says:

“It isn’t even like Carano is one of the top women out there. She is purely there for her sex appeal. ”

Dude cmon. It’s not like they put her in the main events. It’s not a bad strategy to market her. She’s beautiful. Women’s MMA is one niche that the UFC isn’t interested in so other orgs can strive.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with pushing someone like Roger Huerta through the roof, even if its just to “get the Hispanic demographic.” The Carano thing is no different, IMO.

Mikes 2 losses in the IFL hurt his standings a bit as someone who is top of the food chain. That said, he’s still a solid dude who was given a TITLE SHOT. I don’t think that’s being disrespected at all. If he won, the company would obviously be forced to build lots of things around him.

  20. […] gotta run his shit shady and treat people like shit. But now the details are coming out and Mike Pyle is looking like quite the douche: Mouth: Yes absolutely, so does it make you upset when someone like Gina Carano is […]

  21. Dedwyre says:

In another wrestling comparison, Pyle sounds like Kevin Nash or Hulk Hogan influencing WCW to hold the cruiserweights down.

  22. Vijay Singh, didn’t he say the same types of things regarding Sorenstam in golf?

  23. ilostmydog says:

Nah, Vijay’s complaints were moreso directed at the fact that Sorenstam was getting sponsors exemptions to compete in tournaments, rather than having to qualify like most of the field.
