Friday fight notes: Dana White has a lot to say

Just asking… If Monte Cox is going to be the CEO of M-1, how is this any different than the situation Stephane Patry is in with TKO (as both a promoter and an agent)?

Dana White is laying the hammer down in regards to fighters who are unhappy about their UFC paychecks. Fox Sports quotes White as saying that Couture “belongs to me.”

“I’ve got these guys for three-, four-, five-, six-fight deals and then their contracts come up, why are they re-signing with me? Why do they keep re-signing with me when all these other guys are out there throwing crazy money around? Because we’re paying these guys very well and we take care of them.”

And…

“At the end of the day, he’s someone I consider a friend,” White said. “As men, as humans, we all have our own paths to walk down. I don’t know what he’s doing. The thing that upset me is when he said me and [Zuffa owner] Lorenzo [Fertitta] lied to him. Lorenzo and Frank [Fertitta] are good people and never lie to anyone. This just isn’t the Randy I know, and I’ve dealt with him for eight years. Does it hurt the company? Yeah. He could have had one more big fight. But it’s not going to hurt us long-term.”

  1. mmafan says:

ali ibrahim, that’s the gold olymppic wrestler, right?
the one who fought on last year’s Dynamite?

  2. Ivan Trembow says:

These quotes from a September 2006 interview that the Canadian Press did with Dana White (which I found archived on MMAWeekly) are unintentionally ironic in hindsight:

“Believe me when I tell you, brother, people aren’t leaving me.”

“Everybody’s happy. None of us are arguing, none of us are bitching and none of us are fighting. We get along with all of our fighters very well. They feel like they’re part of a very happy family. Let me tell you what, I can sleep at night. I’m not in this for the money and I never was.”

“We’ve got this thing rolling and we’re thrilled, thrilled that these guys are able to make what they’re making.”

But he said his fighters don’t like their paydays being revealed. “Because when people know what you make, it causes a lot of problems in your life.”

  3. Jordan Breen says:

    mmafan,

Karam Ibrahim Gaber is the gold medal Olympic wrestler who fought at Dynamite!! 2004. Ali Ibrahim is his cousin who trains with Jacksons in Albuquerque and fought Caol Uno in March.

  4. Preach says:

Zach, Randy’s character is not named “Invincible”. He was an extra on the Vince Papale biopic “Invincible”

  5. I think Munoz may have appeared on a podcast in the last couple months, or maybe on Fight Network Radio.

The interview I’m thinking of also involved his trainer or former coach, and had a LOT of background noise. If anyone can identify that podcast and clarify if this is the same guy, I’d appreciate it.

  6. I’d also like to note that that is as prime an example of a paint-by-number press release as I have ever witnessed.

It’s crapiness is so extensive that one might even consider it a work of art as a paragon of worthlessness.

  7. Ivan Trembow says:

The UFC is very, very fortunate that the SportsCenter anchors do not know enough about MMA to ask any relevant questions of Dana White.

  8. The Gaijin says:

“Karam Ibrahim Gaber is the gold medal Olympic wrestler who fought at Dynamite!! 2004.”

    Correction:

Karim Ibrahim fought on Dynamite!(2004), while Ali Ibrahim fought on Dynamite!!(2007).

Please note the correct use of “!” s 🙂

  9. ilostmydog says:

Yeah, definitely, because if he answered relevant questions then he would be somehow exposed in some kind of way that would vindicate his critics?

  10. Ivan, how has anything you quoted from Dana inconsistent or ironic? Has anyone else left besides Randy Couture (which is new development)? Are there reports that fighters are bickering (gossiping is not the same thing)?

I read non-stop negative stuff about Dana and I always expect the worst of him because of it, but everytime I hear the man first hand like in the UFC presser on Sprawl n’ Brawl or on ESPN and he comes off completely different. He sounds honest, straight forward and even humble (did you hear him apologize for the Canada cancellation)? Where is this a-hole everyone keeps talking about?

I wonder if a lot his critics rag on the man simply because he represents the bully that picked on them in grade school.

  11. On Scorpion King, did anyone notice it was a “DVD original” aka straight to video crap. I can’t believe Randy is going to bank on something that ain’t even making it to the big screen.

  12. PizzaChef says:

I think this is news worthy….Tito Ortiz selling hot dogs on the street with John Cena.

  13. Preach says:

GC, that’s what i’ve been talking about last week in detail 😉

  14. Jordan Breen says:

“Karim Ibrahim fought on Dynamite!(2004), while Ali Ibrahim fought on Dynamite!!(2007).

Please note the correct use of “!” s ”

NYE’s Premium Dynamite!! has always been two exclamation points, and Ali Ibrahim fought on a regular HERO’S card.
