Thursday trash talk: Too many shows

By Zach Arnold | June 21, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

Now I realize why UFC doesn’t want to be a publicly-traded company.

This weekend’s activities: StrikeForce on Friday at the San Jose Arena with Shamrock vs. Baroni. Tuff ‘n Uff on Friday night in Las Vegas with Frank Mir vs. Renato Babalu and Brad Imes on the undercard. On Saturday, Las Vegas has two major fights (Ricky Hatton vs. Jose Luis Castillo and BJ Penn vs. Jens Pulver) plus Kimbo Slice vs. Ray Mercer from Atlantic City and Chris Jericho at the HOOK ‘n SHOOT event in Kentucky. Also, K-1 with the bizarre return of Bob Sapp in Holland to fight Peter Aerts. Sunday (if you care about pro-wrestling) is a WWE PPV. The schedule of content never seems to end.

Onto today’s headlines.

  1. Bloody Elbow: It’s time to fire Armando Garcia and Keith Kizer
  2. The Columbia Tribune: A long day’s journey into fights at Family Arena
  3. CBS Sportsline: Sokoudjou confirms talks with UFC
  4. The LA Times: UFC announces super bowl series bouts
  5. The Evansville Courier Press: Ex-wrestler Chris Jericho to show his nice side at HOOK ‘n SHOOT event (Jeff Osborne is a great man for booking this)
  6. The Homer News (Alaska!): Friends, co-workers prepare for fights, Ultimate challenge
  7. The Detroit News: Legislation could bring professional sport to state (make sure to read this as well)
  8. The Detroit News: Cage rage – Amateur MMA quickly becoming a knockout in Michigan
  9. Jake Rossen: Size matters
  10. The Edmonton Sun: Bad blood brewin’
  11. The Philadelphia Daily News: Mercer, Kimbo are taking it to the street
  12. The Whitehaven News (UK): Martin Thompson’s ultimate title shot
  13. Inside Bay Area (The San Jose Mercury News): Frank Shamrock still big cage-fight figure
  14. Fightlinker: Nick Diaz suspended from not fighting, too

    MMA.

    IS.

    JERICHO!

  2. Euthyphro says:

Some great photos of this Saturday’s UFC from Ireland:

  3. D.Capitated says:

Yeah, it makes perfect sense, given that Dana White has hinted at killing himself as a plot device for the upcoming TUF 6. In a serious note, that may be the single worst attempt I’ve seen in ages to tie MMA and pro wrestling at the hip.

  4. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Superbowl series…so they’re going to end up consolidating the UFC and Pride belts…

I don’t know how I feel about that.

  5. D.Capitated says:

Yeah, it would be a horrible tragedy to have unified world champions for once in a sport such as MMA. What the Zuffa really ought to do is ignore one of the strong points they’ve had with the media (single champions) and build up 3-4 world titles to defend whenever they want.

  6. Adam Morgan says:

Don’t forget MMA Big Show in Cincinnati, OH too.

  7. Ahhh yes.

Leave it to Helmkay to make the address of CCF one of his coney dog shops.

  8. Mr. Roadblock says:

Speaking of wrasslin’. Is Vince McMahon still dead? Does the FBI have any leads on that?

  9. Zack says:

Babalu vs Mir is just grappling.

  10. chairibofjustice says:

I’m no fan of Armando Garcia and wouldn’t mind seeing him get the ax but not over what’s happened to Nick Diaz.

  11. Daniel says:

Please make it so clicking on the links within your articles opens a new window. It’s not the worst thing in the world but I’m sure your regular visitors would appreciate it. Thanks
    Again…

Allow links in articles to OPEN NEW WINDOW

  12. There’s also a major K1 Europe show

  13. JThue says:

Daniel… Get a mouse with a scroller wheel and simply click the wheel when hovering the link. Works in Opera and IE at least. Hopefully them laptop pads have a similar function available too. I wouldn’t know.

  14. Asa says:

    Daniel

Shift-Click. Or use a browser (IE7, Firefox) that allows you to customize how links open in new windows or tabs.

Hard-coding the links to open in a new window is a UI no-no because it detracts from the average users expected behavior (they click and it opens right there) and would add new windows popping up to an unsuspecting users desktop.

If you do as I suspect you do (open each new headline in a separate window quickly while scanning headlines) might I suggest a tabbed browser like Opera or Firefox? Open the latest headlines from half a dozen sites in one window. Even easier with a RSS plugin or a RSS homepage like iGoogle.

  15. D.Capitated says:

Just another item too on the news stories: Alaska’s had a regular MMA show for quite some time. Several shows run in Anchorage and Fairbanks quite regularly, often more than once a month during the winter. Alaska Fighting Championships is about to do their 36th show.

  16. Ivan Trembow says:

lol at Frank Shamrock thinking that he was, is, or ever will be “the face of the sport.” From the San Jose Mercury News article:

“”I think I’ll be the face of the sport,” he said. “It may take another generation for people to figure out what I’ve been talking about. I just hope I don’t have to be like Bruce Lee, to die to make a statement.””

  17. Euthyphro says:

Krazy Horse is out of prison, in plenty of time to fight:

  18. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

In Firefox and in IE, ctrl-Leftmouse opens in a new tab, while shift-Leftmouse opens in a new window.

I like the idea of having one champion per weightclass, but what I’m not so sure about is the idea that basically all your championship matches could end up in Japan or whatever. How do Pride fans feel about the possibility that all of their title matches could be in UFC events?

Or, are the ladders going to be set up so that every time a belt is defended, it’s against someone from the other promotion? Are we going to have all title matches at some 3rd “neutral ground” promotion under a totally different title?

UFC PPVs with title bouts tend to be stronger cards than those without, so I’m apprehensive. I don’t like the idea that the only events worth paying for could end up being Pride vs. UFC 52 or something.

  19. 45 Huddle says:

The casual fan has voted. The UFC Titles are the main titles in the sport. Zuffa has to follow this trend and make sure the best fighters at the end of the day are wearing those straps.

    HEAVYWEIGHT – They need Fedor.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT – Rua is the #1 fighter, but at least he is in the mix. Eventually the best will hold the belt, no matter who it is.

MIDDLEWEIGHT – This division has never had a true champion. Silva, Lindland, Henderson, Misaki, Filho, and a few others could all lay claim to this. By the end of 2008, this division should have more order.

WELTERWEIGHT – Serra is the #1 in the world by beating the previous champion.

LIGHTWEIGHT – Much like Middleweight, this has always been a cluster. It is going to take a while for all this great talent to fight.

I’m actually going to TUF5 Finale. Should be fun.

  20. 45 Huddle says:

Is it me, or does this next Elite XC PPV feel way too much like boxing?

    1. Two different organization’s title belts. A Strikeforce & Elite XC Middleweight Title. And the titles aren’t even being unified. At least with the next UFC unification, it is one and done, and then that’s it.

    2. Lot of “named” fighters fighting non named MMA fighters.

    3. Listening to Josh Thomson on Sherdog, he basically said it took like 25 people to finally find an opponent.

It just feels like that unless it is in the UFC, fights have a real difficult time being made. just like boxing. Unless the fighters name is Matt Lindland, a lot of these fighters just end up not fighting each other. This “alliance” BS really hasn’t gotten the fans much.

  21. JThue says:

“1. Two different organization’s title belts. A Strikeforce & Elite XC Middleweight Title. And the titles aren’t even being unified. At least with the next UFC unification, it is one and done, and then that’s it.”

    – Because it IS two different orgs and not two promotions owned by the same company. This is all happening because Shamrock signed two contracts, remember. Also, Dana White has specifically stated the UFC & PRIDE belts aren’t being unified into one in September – the winner will simply hold both, which is in fact boxing-ish, if you will. Meanwhile, WEC also has its set of belts.

“2. Lot of “named” fighters fighting non named MMA fighters.”

    – Hardly the case on this card. Even Le has decent opposition. This card is a lot more balanced than some of the stuff UFC has put on in the past, nevermind PRIDE and K-1. IMO this is the best MMA-card in luna-June.

“3. Listening to Josh Thomson on Sherdog, he basically said it took like 25 people to finally find an opponent.

It just feels like that unless it is in the UFC, fights have a real difficult time being made.”

UFC scramble for opponents for many of their name fighters on a monthly basis. They have a list of fighters “no one wants to fight” as well, and when push came to shove, EXC and SFC are delivering the very PPV card they’ve been promoting for ages, with Bennett the only withdrawee.

  22. Daniel says:

To JThue, Asa and Jeremy (not that Jeremy): I use IE and am pretty familiar with the ins-and-outs. I always right click> “Open In New Window”. Within a few minutes of surfing I usually end up with about ten windows anyway.

While I appreciate your advice, I simply feel that it would only benefit me and many others to have it automatically open a new window. I’ve been meaning to suggest this since I first found this site several months ago.

Either way, keep up the good work. I appreciate this website more and more as time goes on.
