Report: PRIDE returns on August 18th

By Zach Arnold | June 19, 2007

By Zach Arnold

Nikkan Sports reported on Wednesday morning that the first show of the ‘shinsei’ (newborn) PRIDE will happen on August 18th at Saitama Super Arena (the same ‘home’ building that DSE used). The theme of the show will be a “Japanese all-star” presentation, centered around Hidehiko Yoshida.

Meanwhile, UFC is allegedly finding more ways to keep busy — just ask Phil Baroni. Original reporting here.

    Enchallah I hope so.

  2. Zack says:

Rumor is the main event is Goodridge vs Yatsu 3.

  3. Mr. Roadblock says:

I think you mean Inshallah, god willing in Arabic.

  4. Ivan Trembow says:

“Meanwhile, UFC is allegedly finding more ways to keep busy — just ask Phil Baroni.”

What did it say on the page on Graciefighter.com? Now it just says “Strikeforce Card” and the entry itself says “REMOVED BY REQUEST.” So, what did it say originally?

Never mind, I found what it said before it was removed:

“The Frank Shamrock VS Phil Baroni Strikeforce card has suffered a major setback with Baroni now scrambling to pass his medical requirements. Baroni had in fact previously passed all his medicals but is now having his MRI results re-evaluated after it had come to the attention of the CSAC that there was a previous problem with an old MRI report from Las Vegas, dating back when he fought Pete Sell.

Our inside sources have confirmed that it was representatives from the UFC that faxed over Baroni’s MRI to Armando Garcia of the CSAC, thus prompting this latest issue. Baroni has been cleared to fight in Las Vegas, Nevada since the Pete Sell fight, with his latest appearance in the state occuring in Pride on October, 21st 2006. It is unclear why California would now bar him. We will keep our readers up to date with whether or not Phil is able to clear his latest hurdles, or if a replacement will be necessary.”

  5. jgass says:

It is very doubtful that UFC would do something like that. The idea that they would even have a copy of his MRI seems odd. That would be a major HIPPA violation and open them up to a massive lawsuit and a penalty from the Feds.

  6. 45 Huddle says:

If Baroni is off the card, then this PPV losses most of the interest to the hardcore fans.

After the Shamrock/Bisping false rumor, I will wait for confirmation from credible sources before I come to judgment.

  7. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Well, that August 18th show sounds like a pretty ballsy way to return to the stage for Shin Pride.

I honestly would have expected them to run Bushido shows instead to get the name back up, but this sounds like go big or don’t go at all. If the show fails, then there are big stakes to be lost.

  8. Man, Cesar Gracie really knows how to dish dirt.

  9. […] What a fast paced world we live in. Just two days ago it was thought PRIDE may be completely dissolved with all of its top and mid-tier talent signing with the UFC and World Extreme Cage Fighting. New reports have surfaced that this will not be the case and Pride will hold its first post-UFC sale show on August 18th at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan according to FightOpinion.com. […]

  10. Jonathan says:

    Mr. Roadblock

There are many different ways to English-cize Arabic words…and enchallah is just one of many. And yes, I knew that it meant “God willing” in Arabic, hence worth why I used it.

And still, I hope that Pride is back.

  11. […] Pride to Return! After recent comments that Pride may be dissolved of which I was weary of a new report has come out that Pride will be back on August 18th!  This site is reporting that; I know it’s in Japanese or something but the translation is the following from FightOpinion: […]

  12. Sam Scaff says:

If this Pride news is true, it really makes my day. Pride disappearing felt like my own child being kidnapped. It left a void inside of me. I hope Pride comes back and hasnt changed a thing. They didnt need to change a thing. I dont care what people say about their American shows, I went to Pride 33 and it was an absolutely amazing show. certainly better than most UFC shows in the past 10 years. A few more shows like that and Pride can be a force in America. A new deal in japan and it could be as big and great as it used to be.

  13. Jonathan says:

I feel the same way Sam Scaff

  14. Kev says:

Josh Gross is completely slamming the graciefighter.com report on the radio. The MRI came from NSAC, not the UFC, and there was no real issue with Baroni’s MRI in the first place.

  15. Lynchman says:

The Fight Network is saying they have been told that the MRI came from Scott Coker.

  16. InvisSoul says:

Apparently Baroni has been cleard to fight accoring to MMA Weekly.

“Despite speculation about Phil Baroni’s medical clearance for the fight, he was also was approved this morning by the CSAC to compete on Friday night. Baroni faces Frank Shamrock for the Strikeforce middleweight belt in the main event of the evening.”
