Tuesday headlines: UFC Fight Night

Yes, there is indeed a UFC event on Spike TV tonight. Time for you to predict the rating. Give us your prediction for the cable TV rating in the comments section (and fight predictions, if interested).
Greg Sirb, the commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission, has been sued. The lawsuit alleges that Sirb interfered with a contract between a casino (Casino Del Sol in Tucson) and a promoter (Lion Heart Boxing Productions) in the state of Arizona.
Plaintiff’s lawsuit alleged, among things, that Mr. Sirb, intentionally interfered with their contract with Casino Del Sol, improperly tried to induce the casino to breach its contract, illegally tried to prevent the plaintiffs from promoting the June 21, 2007 fight, defamed plaintiffs and also involved himself in a conspiracy to circumvent plaintiffs contractual rights. Ancillary to the actions related to the June 21, 2007 event, plaintiffs also sued Mr. Sirb for host of improprieties spanning a period of six months.

Luke Thomas on the difference between an arm-lock and a kimura. The interesting thing about reading this point is that, to me, it illustrates a real difference between American and Japanese MMA fans. In Japan, you never hear the term ‘kimura’ or ‘Americana.’ Nobody knows what you’re talking about over there when you use those terms over there. But they do know keylock, V1 armlock, etc. I know those, too.

Another boxer rips into MMA. This time, the boxer is Glen Johnson. He was quoted in today’s Palm Beach Post as stating:
“You see a fight in the parking lot, and it’s close to what a mixed martial arts fight looks like,” Johnson said. “People can relate to it.”
In regards to the latest report about Quinton Jackson in PRIDE, the two people he’s likely referring to are Yukino Kanda and Hideki Yamamoto (the PRIDE US bosses).

The ratings might not be that good for this card, but surely everyone is more excited about this than the mediocrity that is UFC 72, no?
I’m sort of ambivalent about this upcoming UFN and UFC. Don’t get me wrong, every event that the UFC puts on is another opportunity to make a wager, so I can’t really complain. Additionally, I’m a MMA junkie so unless DJ Hapa or Tommy Morrison are in it, I’ll watch almost anything. Subconsciously, I think I’m saving my valuable Chi energy for the TUF finale and UFC 73.
I am pretty stoked about the Franklin/Okami fight and Guida/Griffen fight respectively. Those are going to be two quality fights and I’ve got no problem plunking down my cash for it. That being said, UFC 73 and 74 are really going to be off the hook.
You know there’s nothing wrong with taking a break a charging one’s MMA batteries.
Sam Stout vs Spencer Fisher is as exciting to me as Parisyan vs Sanchez. It’s not gonna end quick either. I bet the ratings are gonna spike (pun intended) as the match goes on and these sluggers pound it out.
If you by crap, Dana will give you crap - and laugh at you a little bit. UFC 72 is crap. Don’t buy this crap and you won’t have to worry about crap again. namsayin?

Funny that Luke Thomas calls out Kevin Iole for getting the meaning of Kimura wrong, but then doesn’t captialize the K in Kimura. Perhaps Luke doesn’t know it is named for Masahiko Kimura and thus the K is captialized. Rule No. 1 on calling someone else out for getting something wrong: Make sure you get it right yourself.

That’s pretty nitpicky. Eponymous acts like that typically become non-capitalized just because they get worked into the lexicon. Billiards fans assuredly don’t hit the shift key every time they mention a masse shot.

I can’t wait until NY wakes up and legalizes MMA. Fights in Madison Square Garden look and feel epic. I imagine by early next year Eliot Spitzer the new Governor will have the wheels in motion to sanction MMA in the state.

I think the main event will be alright. but that Fitch-Carnerio fight will be great too.
Talk about nitpicking. Not to mention that you’re wrong. Even in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Theory and Technique, Royler and Renzo refer to it as a “Kimura” upon introduction to the technique and from there on out it is referred to as a “kimura,” lower case.
The fact of the matter is, that isn’t the point. Mainstream media wouldn’t know technique if it hit them in the face.

Funny you say that, Arum openly admitted to copying the UFC’s format for Cotto Judah.
The broadcast was as good if not better than anything UFC has ever done.
Of course, everything is better than the UFC.
How to make the Finals relevant again
• If you find yourself writing a sports column and want to know whether anyone out there is paying attention, here’s the quickest way to find out: Write something even slightly derogatory about UFC in particular and mixed martial arts in general.
• Three things you will find out about yourself from reading through some of the hundreds of e-mails: (1) You are either a closeted boxing fan or a boxing fan who is attempting to destroy MMA as a means of keeping boxing alive; (2) you wouldn’t last three minutes in the octagon with the writer of the e-mail, and; (3) you are, dear sir, an ass.

LOL Body_Shots! It’s true by the sound of it from all the stuff I’ve read and/or wrote myself. I hope I wasn’t that bad, but it could be a mild version of #3 in some cases. Seriously, though…you work for the UFC, don’t you.
I’m not someone who says everything is better than UFC. But Cotto-Judah was a better top to bottom production. Good matchmaking, good pacing and nobody does fights like the HBO Production team. From the amount of cameras, to the corner talks and the way the shows are lit it’s phenomenal. Usually UFC events are much better than HBO boxing events because HBO lets the promoters run hog wild with their money and put on half assed shows. But when a boxing promoter gets it right, as Arum did Saturday, boxing on HBO is as good as it gets.
I read weeks back where Arum said he would copy the pacing of UFC shows. He did even better. The fights were on one after the other almost like it was a smoker card. That crowd was super hyped. That’s one thing UFC has to work on, they don’t mic the crowd the right way. Everyone I know that was in Columbus, OH said it was deafening in that building. That didn’t come across on TV. I’ve been to UFC’s where the crowd is bonkers and then watch the show on TV and the crowd sounds muted. Just an observation.

That could apply to virtually any sporting event you watch on television really, it’s the nature of the medium.
Not true. The CBS & FOX does an excellent job of capturing the crowd at NFL games. As I mentioned HBO does the same on boxing.
What do you mean not true? As I mentioned, there are plenty of events where the crowd isn’t captured on television.

Yes, that was nitpicky about the Kimura. That’s the whole point. If you’re going to call someone else, you better make damn sure you have everything right yourself. Period.
Got a source on the grammatical legitimacy to writing ‘Kimura’ instead of ‘kimura’? I’ve never read that techniques are considered proper nouns…
