The Ultimate Fighter Season 5, Episode 10

By Erin Bucknell

Nate Diaz talks about how he likes Corey Hill, but is concentrating on winning. He feels that he needs to train with BJ’s team as the person that he is fighting, Corey, is on his Team Jens as well.

Corey seems to be losing his mind in the sauna, including talking to his alter-ego, Buddy. I admit that I talk to myself a lot, but I’ve never had an alter-ego. Also, the trash-bag sweat suits are soooo nasty.

Joe Lauzon isn’t too happy with Nick training with Team BJ, as he doesn’t want the other team knowing his injuries. BJ comments that he thinks Nate is there “because Jens doesn’t teach him shit”.

Nate is fairly sure that he is going to get shit from Team Jens for practicing with Team BJ.

Jens has the “What the fuck?” look on his face when Nate tells him that he trained with BJ. I can understand Nate wanting to train away from Corey, but he probably could have explained his position a little better to his team.

Jens has decided that he won’t officially corner either guy.

Nate Diaz vs. Corey Hill

Round 1: Corey comes out swinging and Nate grabs a leg for a takedown. Corey sprawls out and they go back to standing for a second before Nate goes in again. Corey ends up on top and drops a few punches before backing off and letting Nate stand. This happens several times with stand up interspersed in between. Nate manages to lock in a triangle submission from the bottom and Corey taps. Corey did much better than I though he would. Another couple years and he’s going to be scary. Corey takes the loss well.

Karo Parisyan sneaks up on Manny (who’s his cousin) in the gym and sticks around to help train everyone. We see Karo and Manny train together and it’s rather obvious that they really don’t mess around when doing so.

BJ says that the fight won’t be won by technique. While I get what he’s saying, I also hope that the fight won’t be won by flailing wildly like a drunken gorilla either.

Matt Wiman vs. Many Gamburyan

Round 1: Both guys start with very aggressive standup followed by Matt going for a takedown. Matt ends up in Manny’s full guard. Both guys are still throwing on the ground and Manny manages to flip them around and gain the dominant position. Matt stands up but Manny has a death grip on his head. The ref calls for a time out for the doctor to check a couple of cuts on Wiman’s face. When the fight starts again, they lock up and Manny trips up Wiman to land in full guard. They go back to standing with Manny eventually wrestling Matt back down, this time with Matt smooshed against the cage.

Round 2: They fighters lock up and Manny gets a takedown and kinda ends up sprawled across Matt’s legs. He moves to full guard and then to half. Matt then moves him back to full guard. Ref Herb stands them up for inactivity and Matt manages to block a takedown attempt. He then goes for one of his own, but Manny props himself on the fence and Matt is only half-way successful. Manny goes for a kimura and Matt manages to get Manny’s back. He then goes for an arm bar, but Manny slides out and works to Matt’s half guard. Matt pushes him back to full guard as the round ends.

I’m rather entertained by BJ’s reenactment of Matt’s facial defense during the fight.

Winner: Manny Gamburyan via unanimous decision.

*sigh* I personally think that the TUF guys were talking Corey up too much. Nate saying “He’s so tough and going to be the hardest one here…” was ridiculous.

Hell, even I can fight superman since I know he’s weak to Kryptonite.

Nate knew that as soon as his fight was announced, he was going to have to take Corey to the ground and apply submissions. Period. Only experience can give you the defenses you need to avoid them and experience is not what Corey had. Heart yes, XP no.

Will Corey be an animal in 2 or 3 years? I think so, the guy has heart and you can’t teach that.

  2. Andy says:

What is UP with these skilled fighters leaving their heart outside the cage? Emmerson…Wiman…they get in there, get touched once, and roll into a ball. I was incredibly disappointed with Wiman’s performance. He did NOTHING from his back, and very little from his feet. Manny, while energetic and exciting….I just don’t see him having much of a career. I dunno…

And while Corey is incredibly inexperienced (fave quote of last night: “I gotta figure these armbars and triangles out”), he was easily 5 times the fighter he was in his last fight. Here’s hoping he takes Horn up on his offer and heads out to Utah.

  3. justin says:

I agree with Andy – watching Corey reminds me of watching a young Jermain Taylor. Rough, unfinished talent, but it is obvious to everyone that the talent is there. Just watch the first fight and then this one – light years of difference.

Plus, he is charismatic, personable, and quite exciting to watch. In a few years, he’ll be a real threat. I only hope that is hooks up with the right trainers and that the UFC feeds him appropriate opposition. They would be fools to let him slip away – he is the kind of talent you nuture and build up. Great back-story.

  4. GassedOut says:

    Hear Hear!

I’m looking forward to seeing Cory learn some ground game! He’ll be a machine.

Come on, Give Manny a break! One short, stalky guy can see talent in another one. What Manny WILL have to do is really train on his takedown defence and something I don’t see enough of from Jiu-Jitsu/Judo guys, Circular Body Turning, the same footwork you’d use in a knife fight if you’re unarmed. I’ve used that to dodge takedown attempts.

Of course if you’re Karo, you just splatter them on the ground with a good hip throw…you can see Manny trains with his cousin…Go Judo Guys!

  5. Paul says:

Yet another entertaining review. What, no additional thoughts on ‘moderately attractive’ Matt Wiman and his less than stellar performance last night?

I cannot figure out what happened. It’s like he lost his heart when he realized that Gamburyan was really there to fight!

  7. dale says:

Corey looked pretty good standing up. He fought much better than his previous fight against Emerson. At his height, he needs to “fight tall”, not bend at the waist and lead with his face. I concur that Nate won based on his experience… give credit where it’s due, Nate’s a tough kid.

Wiman totally disappointed me. Manny beat him with heart and desire, period.
