Wednesday media mania

By Zach Arnold | January 17, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

I have seen it all now. Today, I learned that when I link to reports in the broadsheets and blogs, I’m simply doing it to steal traffic away from those sites. Seriously.

Information overload. I expect you to read all the stories. To reward you, here’s a teaser: Sankei Sports says that PRIDE is trying to book Emelianenko Fedor vs. Rulon Gardner as the main event of their 2/24 Las Vegas show. How about that Japanese support for Silva vs. Henderson as the main event? Plus, The Fight Network reports that Joachim Hansen wants to fight in America.

And Randy Couture’s wife is bored by Tim Sylvia. Hardcore.

Here are the results of thee 2006 Ground & Pound MMA awards.

Watching the Warrior Nation show on MSNBC, I found some humorous spots on the show with Erin Toughill. Urijah Faber cut a great promo about why he hates American fight fans. In addition, it was funny to watch the Cache Creek Casino crowd completely turn on Toughill, who didn’t understand why the audience was treating her like a heel.

  1. Preach says:

Great to see Uno back in the UFC, i’ve been waiting quite some time for that. Hopefully that means that there’s some sort of working agreement between the UFC and K-1, since he fought for them the last few years. It wouldn’t be that bad an idea for them to send Akiyama over and have him “redeem himself” by facing a few americans…

Now if only Genki hadn’t called it quits…

  2. The MMA Critic says:

Uno vs. Stevenson is a very good fight. I am a big fan of Uno’s. The UFC is definitely testing Stevenson. Giving him Mishima & Uno in back-to-back fights is no easy task.

  3. Erin says:

Ha, Mrs. Randy obviously has good taste.

  4. Jordan Breen says:

Sherdog’s Brazilian Notebook feature also confirms that Thiago Tavares has been signed by the UFC, which isn’t too shabby. Pretty good prospect.

  5. The MMA Critic says:

What weight does he compete at? He looks smaller in the picture on Sherdog.

The UFC should really sign Joachim Hansen. He has an exciting style, speaks English, and despite his loss to Aoki, it still Top 10 in the world. Plus, he has a win over Takanori Gomi. you combine him with Sherk, Penn, Stevenson, Uno, Franca, Fisher, & Griffin, and this division has gotten loaded really quickly. Wait until TUF5 comes on. It will only stack the division even more.

  6. Jordan Breen says:

Tavares fights at 155. His first opponent may be Naoyuki Kotani, though that’s far from official, and hopefully not true, since Kotani is garbage.

  7. Zack says:

I hope we don’t have to see Randy vs Tito 2. The first fight was monumental due to Randy surprising most people and taking the title, but it was a definite snoozefest with no rewatch value.

  8. Mr. Roadblock says:

If Randy loses to Tim, I think you’ll see Randy/Tito II and Randy/Ken those are two wins for Randy. If QJ is the champ at that point you’ll get Randy/QJ that will be his 4 fights.

If he beats Tim you’ll get Randy/Cro Cop. If that doesn’t end his career but assuming he loses I think you still get Randy/Tito II and Randy/Ken.

  9. Mr. Roadblock says:

This is somewhat of an aside, but can we please stop saying Randy retired. He hasn’t even been gone a year. A lot of guys take 11 months off between fights for various reasons. Whether you say “I’m retiring” or not I think there needs to be a certain amount of time say at least 18 months or 2 years before you can be “retired”. Randy just took a break. Bas Rutten however came back from retirement this summer.

  11. Zeppelin says:

Fedor vs Rulon Gardner? Bring it on, I’d love to see that match. Rulon really took the fight to Yoshida, and it always made me wonder why he didn’t keep fighting in MMA. He showed a lot of talent.

  12. Preach says:

Zeppelin: Supposedly Gardner said that he wasn’t interested in doing more MMA, but my guess would be that we simply didn’t see him since his fight against Yoshida due to the hefty pricetag that comes with him. It was rumored that he got something between 600k and 1 mio $ for Shockwave 2004, which is really a shitload of cash…
