Spencer Fisher vs. Dan Lauzon

Spencer has some very interesting entrance music. Very, umm, subdued.

Wow, Lauzon’s a bit of a youngen isn’t he? “The Upgrade”? Wow that’s worse than “The Athlete.” (Ed. — At least he didn’t call himself ‘The Marine’.)

Oh great, I’ve got sound and no video, this isn’t good. And it kinda comes back with Fisher on his back and Lauzon standing to avoid the kicks. Lauzon doing some serious domination and moves to side guard. Fisher manages to get back to standing and they are up against the fence. They go back to the middle of the ring and Spencer gets some good knees in. He then gets a big hit and Lauzon is toast. Ref calls the fight.

Winner: Spencer Fisher (R1 by referee stoppage)

Cheick Kongo vs. Carmelo Marrero

Wow, Marrero wins for random tattoos of the night, what appear to be hieroglyphics on his arm and an ink-blot test on his back.

Round 1. Stand up and circling punctuated by some nice legs kicks by Kongo for the first minute before Marrero gets a takedown into side control. Kongo grabs Marrero’s head for a bit of defense. Marrero is throwing some knees to the body. Wow this is a rather energetic heavyweight match, go both guys. Kongo gets Marrero into full guard and moves them up against the fence. Round ends.

Round 2. Gah!!! More video problems, not ok. Thankfully they end before the round starts. Kongo goes right back to the leg kicks, Marrero gets another takedown into half guard up against the fence. Kongo gets a guillotine and is holding on for dear life. Marrero slips out and lands some nasty shots. Ref stands them up and Marrero immediately gets another takedown. Ref stands them up again and Kongo is all about the leg kicks until Marrero gets another takedown. Round ends,

Round 3. Damnit, I’m really getting annoyed with the video problems. Marrero goes for the takedown again, but Kongo finally manages to block it and they end up clinched against the fence. The fight hits the ground and the ref stands them up rather quickly. Guess he’s getting annoyed with all the non-action. Kongo blocks another takedown and manages to get top position this time. Kongo is in half guard and throws on elbows before going for a kimura. Kongo moves to side control and Marrero manages to get standing. Marrero gets a takedown and the ref stands them up. They go into the fence and stay there until the round ends.

Winner: Carmelo Marrero by a 2-1 judges’ decision.

Marrero wins by split decision. Wow, I can see maybe giving the last round to Kongo, but not either of the first two.

Jon Fitch vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka

Kuniyoshi shall hereby be referred to as Yoshi, ‘cause his name is way too long. The fight goes up against the fence rather quickly with Yoshi in control. Fitch gets a good takedown and Yoshi goes for a triangle from the bottom. Fitch takes them over to the fence to get some leverage. Fitch works out of the triangle and starts dropping some punches. Yoshi goes for the triangle again but Fitch gets his back and starts working for a rear naked choke. Round ends.

Round 2. Fitch gets a big slam on Yoshi and throws some punches from the guard. Fitch moves to side control for a bit but goes back to Yoshi’s full guard. They go back to their feet before Fitch gets another take down against the fence and Yoshi starts going for the triangle again. Fitch gets some elbows in as the round ends.

Round 3. Fitch gets some nice kicks in and they start exchanging punches before clinching against the fence. Fitch takes down Yoshi against the fence but is bleeding pretty nicely from the nose. The ref stops the fight for the doctor to check it out. All appears to be well and the fight continues. Fitch continues to dominate from the top until the ref stands them up. Yoshi looks to be much more interested in keeping the fight standing but Fitch once again gets a takedown. He ref stands them up for the last few seconds of the fight.

Oh geez on the replay you can see that Fitch busted his own nose open on a takedown. Poor guy.

Winner: Jon Fitch by unanimous decision.

Ya know, with all this “we wish farewell to Shamrock” stuff, I really am starting to think that this is far more them retiring him, and not so much his decision.

Oh look, it’s Tim Sylvia in the background, and shock of shocks — he’s wearing his belt.

Lightweight Title Match (155 pounds) – Kenny Florian vs. Sean Sherk

Florian comes out to Our Lady of Wailing Sorrow and a really stupid looking faux Samurai get up. Which is apparently a bit confusing to get out of.

OK Sherk, what’s the point of having entrance music if you listen to your iPod all the way down to the octagon? Why not use entrance music that you like?

Round 1. Sherk gets a fast takedown and ends up in Florian’s guard. Sherk moves to half guard. Florian gets him back to full guard. Florian goes for a guillotine and
Sherk moves back to half guard before sliding out. Sherk moves to side guard and goes for an arm bar. Florian wiggles out and is back on the ground. Round ends.

Round 2. Another quick takedown to start out. Florian opens up Sherk’s head and goes for an arm. They stop the fight to check the cut, but its is on the side of his head and not affecting anything except the color of the mat so the fight continues. Sherk moves to full mount. Florian flips them and is in Sherk’s guard. Back to standing and Sherk goes for a takedown against the fence, Florian kinda blocks it but Sherk refuses to let go of his leg. They separate as the round ends.

Round 3. They exchange kicks before Sherk gets another takedown into sideguard. Sherk is throwing a lot of elbows and fists. Florian tries to move out but Sherk gets his back, but Florian rolls again. The ref stands them up. Florian goes for a take down but Sherk catches him and throws a knee. Florian gets one of his own as the round ends.

Round 4. Florian with some high kicks, and avoids a takedown. He doesn’t avoid a second one though. Sherk gets side guard and moves to Florian’s back for a second, before going back to half guard. Ref stands them up and they exchange a few kicks before the round ends.

Round 5. Sherk with a nice slam, Florian goes for an arm bar but Sherk pulls out and goes back to throwing elbows. Ref stands them up and Florian throws some kicks to the head and grabs a guillotine as Sherk gets a takedown. Florian lets go and tries to stand up but Sherk gets a nasty slam. Sherk moves to full mount and gets another slam against the fence. Round ends.

Winner: Sean Sherk by unanimous decision.

And he’s still bleeding. Eww.

Middleweight Title Match (185 pounds) – Rich Franklin vs. Anderson Silva

I would get so annoyed at that many people touching me on the way to the octagon, ack.

Round 1. Both guys throw some punches and leg kicks. They clinch and Silva hits some knees, in fact a whole heck of a lot of them. They separate and Silva gets a head kick followed by a big knee to the head and Rich hits the ground. Big John calls the fight.

Winner: Anderson Silva (R1 -> referee stoppage)

Wow. That was a lot quicker than I thought. Oh shit, Franklin’s nose seems to have migrated several inches to the right.

Dark Match/Fight – Justin James vs. Clay Guida

Round 1. Woo really fast fight, lots of punches and knees before they clinch against the fence. They separate and are back to throwing punches. They hit the ground with Guida in James’ guard. Guida drops some punches and James goes for an arm bar. Guida manages to roll out of it, and is back to dropping elbows as the round ends. That was nice.

Round 2. Guida with a takedown and is in James’ guard dropping elbows. And that’s pretty much the recipe for the next few minutes with Guida standing up a few times before going back into guard. Guida gets James’ back and a rear naked choke. James taps out. Guida does a celebratory lap around the cage.

Winner: Clay Guida (R2 by submission)

  1. Jason says:

Getting his nose broke was bad enough, but as soon as he got to the back, man..putting it back in place again aint no picnic. Trust me.

  2. grafdog says:

In this age of dropping down in weight to get a win, it was great to see an ex 155 lb shooto guy bulk up and destroy an ex 205 weight cutter.

During the weigh in staredown it was like x-mas eve for Silva, who studied Franklin like he was a gift under the tree, signed “to Anderson from Santa”.

On x-mas morn Silva wasted no time tearing into the packaging and box, which by its shape, could only contain the new belt he wanted.

  3. Xenos says:

grafdog, I’m almost positive that Silva was the Shooto champ at 167lbs, not 155.

  4. Jeff says:

I am just happy my boy Silva beat Franklin. Silva’s the real deal.

  5. Sha says:

haven’t read all of this.. but what is “side guard” ?

  6. Erin says:

Heh, typing with a whole ton of loud people over gets distracting, I most likely meant side control.

  7. Monkeymatt says:

Having broke my nose just last week, that was NOT pleasant to look at. Poor Rich is going to be sore for weeks. And jamming the nose straight again… Jason is right. Not fun at all.

Rich looked like a rabbit in the headlights the whole time, including the leadup to this fight. He must be pissed off at Dana to throw him to the wolves so early.

Silva is nowhere near as large as Franklin but totally dominated him with that clinch, that was great.

  8. cjfighter says:

Silva looked stronger than I’ve ever seen him. To control a guy the size of Rich with just a Thai clinch was incredible. I also agree with MonkeyMatt that Rich looked a bit timid even before the fight. The way his right arm just hung at his waist in the clinch led me to believe that the first knee to the body may have been the beginning of the end. If Rich is smart (which I know he is) he will take the fight to the ground and forget the bravado of a stand up war with a striker like Silva.
Which brings up a question: Will it be an Arlovski immediate re-match, or will Rich take a couple of warm up fights before jumping back in?

  9. […] Second, there was that whole bruhaha between two guys who like pro-wrestling. Oh yeah, their names were Ken and Tito, and supposedly nobody wanted to see their third and final fight. Like it was a big deal or something. It only did a 3.1 rating. It’s not like that Tito guy rearranged Ken’s nose on his face like the guy with the last name as his first name, Anderson did to the former math teacher. […]

  10. cblock says:

what was the name of spencer fishers entrance music?

  11. alutii says:

googled the lyrics while watching and guessing from the voice – God’s Gonna Cut You Down – Johnny Cash

  12. alutii says:

    American V – A Hundred Highways
