UFC: The Final Chapter

By Erin | October 10, 2006

By Erin Bucknell

Am I the only one who now has “The Final Countdown” running through their head cause of the title of the show? Just me? Ok, then. *Doodoodoodooooooooo*

Umm, during the opening rundown of the fights, did anyone else notice that all of Tito’s highlights were him beating on Shamrock? Is this UFC’s not-so-subtle way of saying who they are sure will win?

Matt Hamill vs. Seth Petruzelli

Woot, I’m looking forward to see how well Matt has done under the full time training of Team Punishment. Not so much on Seth’s hair. Silverback, we get it dude.

Matt immediately goes for the takedown and they end up against the fence. Seth fights back with some kicks and manages to hold him off. Seth goes for a body kick and Matt catches his leg before swinging him to the ground. Matt ends up in Seth’s guard and drops a lot pf punches before they return to their feet. Seth has a nasty cut under his eye. Matt gets another takedown and is back to dropping elbows and such. Seth starts to go for an arm but Matt backed off enough to get away before dropping back down again. Round ends.

We focus on Seth’s eye during the break and “eww” is about the best way to describe it.

Round 2. Stand up to start off, Seth got a good shot, but Matt was able to get control back and is back in Seth’s guard. Big John separates them for not working enough. Matt continually goes for a takedown and Seth does well on holding it off for a bit before Matt gets him down again. Matt keeps working on Seth’s eye until the end of the round. The bridge of Seth’s nose is now cut too. The doctor comes in to check him out and gives the go ahead.

Round 3. Seth throws a body kick and Matt grabs the leg and they hit the ground. Pretty much the same action as before. Matt is in guard dropping a lot of short fists and elbows. Big John stands them up. Matt goes for another takedown but Seth blocks it with a guillotine. Seth got a spin kick in, but didn’t capitalize and they go back to the ground. John pauses the fight to check out Seth’s eye. Matt’s not looking so pretty anymore either.

Back to action, Matt gets a big slam and does the same thing as before. Seth goes for an arm bar at the last second, but Matt stays away from it as the round ends.

Matt wins by unanimous decision. Really not surprising. Matt talking about his win and how he’s proud of his efforts just makes me go “awwww”. Gah, I’m such a chick sometimes.

Ed Herman vs. Jason MacDonald

The Athlete? Not exactly the most descriptive nickname ever, but ok.

The guys end up against the fence before Ed gets a leg sweep takedown. Rogan is calling it a “wizzer” and I’m giggling. Jason flips them and goes for an arm. Jason is in half guard and starts working for side guard. Jason gets full mount for half a second before Ed flips them, but Jason grabs an arm bar and possibly one or two other things as well. Ed hangs on for a damn long time before finally tapping out. Damn, poor Ed was all tangled up like a pretzel there for a second.

I can just see MacDonald thinking: “Ha! A Triangle is not enough for me, I think I’ll go for a kimura at the same time, ‘cause I’m damn cool like that.”

Rich Franklin interview: Mrrrrrroooooow. That is all.

Kendall Grove vs. Chris Price

Not really big on the “Exorcist” nickname. Either he’s going to throw holy water on someone or start projectile puking. Either way, not so good.

Nice aggressive stand up with some knees and even a foot stomp before Kendall gets Chris down against the cage. Kendall goes for punches while Chris works for an arm. Lots of wiggling around and changing of positions before Kendall gets full mount and drops some elbows. The ref calls the fight and Kendall does his best Tito impression after.

Gotta love how Rogan was commenting that Chris was perfectly fine right before the ref called it off.

I must say, Ken, while most likely not gonna win, he does have fun taste in music. Tito is out with his culturally confused flag. Roommate Jen declares it Bi-National, like Bi-Sexual but with less girl-on-girl action. And speaking of girl-on-girl….Hi Jenna!

Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock

Clinch to start out with both guys throwing knees, Tito backs Ken against the fence and gets a takedown. Tito is dropping short elbows. Tito switches to punches and after a handful the fight is stopped. Ken is down in the corner, and when he finally gets up he manages to stumble over and make nice with Tito. Tito, remarkably enough, makes nice back. I’m worried that I’m once again starting to like Tito, but I’m sure he’ll manage to annoy me sometime in the near future.

Wow he was actually rather nice about the whole thing. Holy Crap.

Ken announces his retirement after the match. To which I say, good for him. Though he did seem to be kinda hedging his bets on whether this was officially official or not.

  1. Jason says:

Better get all your panty creaming out of the way now cause Rich won’t look the same after this Saturday. I’m pulling for Rich but I’m picking Silva. And feel free to hate on Tito, that crap was very fake in my opinion.

  2. Chuck says:

Did anyone else notice that Hamill is a dirty SOB? When Hamill was on top of Petruzelli, notice how Hamill kept wiping his hands on Petruzelli’s face, namely near the face. I think that is why Seth had all those eye problems, because of sweat from Hamill’s gloves, not so much his gloves. Decent fights tonight otherwise.

And I am just thinking to myself…..why the hell am I actually watching this stupid shit Scream Awards right now?

  3. Chuck says:

Sorry for the double posting, but I ment near Seth’s eyes, on his face. Just wanted to fix that, since I can’t go back and edit my post.

  4. Royal B. says:

I’d like another camera angle for the Kendal/Price fight. I still don’t think he tapped.

  5. cjfighter says:

I didn’t see a tap either, I think the ref stopped it because of the elbows. I also agree that the Tito make-up speech was a load of crap. I can’t wait to hear what he has to say after Chuck mauls him again.

  6. Jason says:

haha yeah, for some reason I got the scream awards on in the background. My computer is located at the other end of my living room and I’m too damn lazy to get up and find the remote.

  7. I just wanted to note that I definitely saw the Chris Price tapout on the replay. While Price was being hammered, he was reaching backward over his own head to tap the mat. He did so 2 or 3 times, very quickly, while trying to block the barrage of punches and elbows Kendall was throwing. Great job by the ref for catching that and not just seeing it as a ‘flailing’ of the hands. I didn’t see it either until they showed the replay.

Pretty great fights, Kendall Grove looked pretty good, Ed Herman did not. Hammill looked decent but has quite a lot of work to fully develop his game; I am glad to see him do well and look forward to seeing more from him, Seth Petruzelli is a very durable fighter and was good test for Hammill. Jason McDonald proved himself in an excellent showing against Herman, l love getting more fresh talent in the UFC; I’ve read ‘aboot’ this Canadian for a while and it’s nice to see him have a good showing in the UFC.

Tito’s warm-up for the Liddell match proved to be as one-sided as everyone expected. I’ve never been a big supporter of Ken Shamrock. I’ve never felt he was a serious threat to any opponent, ever. He is a true legend though and will have an important place in MMA history and we all owe him respect and gratitude. Tito will be a much tougher challenge for Chuck than people think. He has improved quite a bit since their first bout and I believe he can actually get Chuck down this time; can he finish him there is the big question.

Erin Bucknell…. Mrrrrrroooooow. That is all.

  8. mph says:

I wasn’t sure if Shamrock retired or was told he was retiring. Seemed pretty half-hearted to me. Or maybe he just didn’t like where all signs were pointing anyhow.

  9. JOSH says:

I honestly think alot of people are underestimating Tito..the guy is in the best shape of his life (granted his comeback fights havent been against top notch talent) BUT he looks like Tito of old and Liddell better lay off the partying and beer becuase its going to be alot tougher the second time around.

I liked the fights, MacDonald impressed me ALOT..I would love to see him vs Dean Lister. Also would be intrested in seeing a Hammill/Rasheed Evans fight somewhere down the line. Im imprssed with Kendall but like many TUF kids I dont see him doing much against the champ in his weight divison…namely Rich “hey if ur down on one knee they cant kick u” Franklin. Guys a beast if not very technical savvy.

  10. Tito of old? Cmon, are you basing that on his last 3 fights? Lets see, he won a controversial decision over Forrest (and before you go there, Forrest came into that fight injured as well) and beat a broken down Ken Shamrock twice.

    Yeah…pretty impressive…

  11. Bigg Dubb says:

Anyone else notice Ken say “Come on man, don’t be a dick, we made a lot of money together” to Tito before the hand shake?

  12. GassedOut says:

Nonetheless, Tito does have a lot of agression. Personally, I’ll pick Chuck, but I don’t think it will be a cakewalk. Tito has a puncher’s chance or better. I’m betting he’ll last longer than Babalu at any rate. Chuck’s the brawlmaster…he’ll win.

I think Ed Hermann needs to change camps. I don’t think Quest is helping him. Mind you, that was impressive as hell, the back and forth for the first 30 seconds to minute.

  13. JOSH says:

Yea Jason…notice the line that says (granted his comeback fights havent been against top notch talent).either way Tito will still give Luiddell a run for his money and I wouldnt be the least bit suprised if he won.

  14. Most people will pick Tito to beat Chuck. Thats just how it goes. Monitor the forums, majority will pick Chuck to lose and will bitch the next day when he wins.

  15. jon doe says:

LOL i love all the Matt Hamill talk. He at this moment is a C, maybe even D level fighter. Who cares if he can wrestle? All he does is take his opponent down and rub his face and forearms all over them – if you ever have or watch wrestling its a common practice. He does not snap his punches, pretty much has no power and if he faces anyone with at least a bit of talent or experience he will be knocked out or submitted.

Ohh you say that he is “just learning”? Well guess what, I dont want to see a fighter that green on a big card like UFC….there is 100s of other fighters out there with much more talent. Let him fight on some non televised matches before they dump garbage such as that on such a touted event.

Overall, I give it a 4 out of 10 – mainly due to the non aggressive, non finishing madefortv UFC stars. Tito and McDonald were fun to watch though as they can actually finish

  16. CHL says:

The whole Price tapping thing can be a little difficult. Yes, in the replay you can see his hand hit the mat, but not sequentially. In the midst of blocking, his hand goes back and his fingertips touch, then he returns the hand to block, then it happens again. Most taps are quickly repeated. Did he tap? I don’t know. He was still “intelligently defending himself” even in the heat of Groves’ strikes. He was in a bad position though, but I think if he could have survived the remaining minute, the next round would have been a lot of fun to watch. I’d like to see these guys scrap again.

  17. Chuck says:

Speaking of Hamill, notice how UFC had his record being 4-0? He is actually 2-0, so they are counting his Ultimate Fighter fights too. If they do that for Hamill, why not for all the other fighters who have fought on TUF?

  18. […] Second, there was that whole bruhaha between two guys who like pro-wrestling. Oh yeah, their names were Ken and Tito, and supposedly nobody wanted to see their third and final fight. Like it was a big deal or something. It only did a 3.1 rating. It’s not like that Tito guy rearranged Ken’s nose on his face like the guy with a last name as his first name, Anderson, did to the former math teacher. […]
