IFC: Caged Combat 4/1

By Erin | April 2, 2006

By Erin Bucknell

I was in attendance for the IFC Caged Combat show at Arco Arena in Sacramento on 4/1. I went into the this not expecting a whole lot in terms of a great show as several matches had already been cancelled/rearranged. The fact that the show started an hour late did not help matters (a delay with the ticket printers in the box office was announced as the reason).

Nick Diaz and Joe Riggs were both in attendance and apparently someone wasn’t paying attention when giving out comped tickets as they ended up seated about 30 feet from each other. However, both guys were completely professional and as far as I know didn’t even exchange eye contact. So good for both of them in what I’m sure was a pretty uncomfortable situation.

Actual results:

  1. Dustin Akabari defeated Sean Basset via ref stoppage due to elbows. Akabari looked good in his match especially as I have heard that this was his first MMA fight.
  2. Richard Blake defeated Kyle Keeny via rear-naked choke.
  3. 10 minute intermission. After two fights, the crowd was not pleased with this.
  4. Christian Wellish defeated Dan Evansonwhen Evanson cannot continue after the second round.
  5. Ryan Jensen defeated Marvin Simms via rear-naked choke in a very quick match.
  6. Jake Ellenberger defeated Gil Castillo via ref stoppage for punches on the ground.
  7. James Irvin defeated Bill Hill via unanimous decision. Irvin took a groin shot early in the first round but managed to rebound.

Overall, the fights were good, and I wasn’t in any way disappointed in the fighters, but I really think that the IFC as a promotion needs a bit of work, between half the fights getting cut and the hour late start time. I’m sure that some of the problems couldn’t have been helped but all together seems a bit more than coincidence.

A more detailed (and snarky) review and a few pictures are up on my website.
