Phil Baroni back in the PRIDE ring

By Zach Arnold | March 8, 2006

By Zach Arnold

DSE announced Yuki Kondo vs. Phil Baroni and Luiz Azeredo (Chute Boxe) vs. Joachim Hansen for their Bushido show on 4/2 at Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo. Add these fights to the three matches already announced. Also scheduled to work the show is Dennis Kang, Ikuhisa Minowa, & Akihiro Gono.

PRIDE boss Nobuyuki Sakakibara announced his intentions for a 16-man Japanese tournament (first round – June, second round – August, third round – October), either a Welterweight or Lightweight tournament.

  1. Luke A. says:

    Three things:

    1. A Yuki Kondo vs. Phil Baroni is much better than Baroni vs Denis Kang.

    2. Jens Pulver and Masakazu Imanari is a very bad fight for Pulver. I’m suprise Monte Cox let Pulver take this fight in all honesty.

    3. Does anyone outside Japan have serious interest in a 16-man Japanese
tournament? The only way this works is if all the top Japanese stars take part, otherwise it could be virture can-fest…

  2. Rob Sayers says:

I’m disapointed we’re not going to see Baroni vs. Ninja as previously rumored.

  3. Tobu says:

Why didn’t DSE set up a Hammer house vs Chute box fight because of the schinanigans at pride 31? I would really like to of seen that!

Baroni vs Kondo should be a good fight anyway and Hansen vs Azerrdo too!

  4. JustSomeDude says:

I wish they would’ve done Baroni vs Ninja.

  5. Rich says:

I still don’t get why they don’t just have Sakuraba drop fifteen pounds and go after Henderson’s title. I guess being lighter and winning fights is less respectable then being heavy and getting the shit knocked out of you.

Baroni vs. Ninja would have been interesting, but who knows maybe they only see money in Coleman vs. Wanderlei, or maybe their pissed that Shogun maybe out for a long time. Who knows what sways the hearts of men.

  6. Liger05 says:

Is it because Sakuraba will not do that. The Fight Professor always says Sak should fight at 185 but he refuses to do so.

  7. [...] DSE announced new matches for their 4/2 Tokyo, Ariake Colosseum event. The new matches are: Akihiro Gono vs. Kim De Won, Mitsuhiro Ishida vs. Paul Rodriguez, Murillo Ninja vs. Paulo Filho, and Dennis Kang vs. Mark Weir. Also, the participation of Ikuhisa Minowa & Seichi Ikemoto. At the press conference, the focus was on Ikemoto and Ishida as the “ikemen” (hot guys) duo. [...]
